New Pathways to Careers open house set for April 13

Current and prospective students can explore career paths and how College of DuPage can help them achieve their goals during the Pathways to Careers Open House, a free event that will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, in the Student Resource Center, Room 2800, on COD's Glen Ellyn campus.

The new event is the result of merging two past programs – the COD Open House and the Career Clusters Fair – and is being held in conjunction with the Artlook Open House for the performing and visual arts.

“It made sense to create one larger, stronger event that could provide even more comprehensive information to the students,” said Amy Hauenstein, coordinator of Admissions at College of DuPage. “High school students, current COD students and prospective adult students will find plenty of helpful information.”

Career information is grouped into one of 16 clusters: Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; Architecture and Construction; Arts, A/V Technology and Communications; Business Management and Administration; Education and Training; Finance; Government and Public Administration; Health Sciences; Hospitality and Tourism; Human Services; Information Technology; Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security; Manufacturing; Marketing; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; and Transportation, Distribution and Logistics.

During Pathways to Career Open House, participants can do the following:

- Meet with representatives from all academic program areas, Admissions, Financial Aid and Counseling

- Identify college and career goals

- Learn about career clusters and career options within each cluster

- Discover the link between core academics and career success

- Listen to industry experts discuss their career areas

- Learn about COD's degree, certificate and transfer programs

COD is also working with faculty members to incorporate Pathways to Careers and career clusters into their curriculum as a way to familiarize students with career options.

“Our goal is to provide answers to questions before students even ask them,” Hauenstein said. “In addition, this event will help students who may have an interest in one subject but are unaware of other career options associated with that subject area.”

Hauenstein encourages students to attend the Pathways to Careers Open House with their parents. She also stresses that adult students thinking of returning to school will find a wealth of information at the event.

Artlook 2011 will take place in the evening only at the McAninch Arts Center. Artlook showcases student works in the performing and visual arts. Attendees can meet student artists and watch theater scenes, walk through exhibits, browse portfolios, listen to music ensembles and enjoy art demonstrations.
