Jacobs rolls over McHenry again
It was a third quarter to remember for Jacobs. It was totally one to erase from the memory bank for McHenry.
Holding a 27-19 halftime lead, the Golden Eagles seized control of the game by outscoring McHenry 25-2 in the third quarter in coasting to a 60-34 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball win in Algonquin Friday night, the second time this week the Eagles beat McHenry.
"I was really pleased with the way we played in the third quarter," said Jacobs boss Jim Hinkle. "We played very well at both ends of the floor. We really ran the floor well and played great help defense. It was a good win going into the regionals next week."
The Golden Eagles, who defeated McHenry 51-40 Tuesday, end the regular season 16-12 overall and 7-3 in Valley play, good enough for second place. Huntley claimed top honors in the FVC Valley with a 9-1 record.
Jacobs will open Class 4A Larkin regional play Wednesday night against District 300 rival Dundee-Crown. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The Eagles and Chargers split their two games this season.
The Golden Eagles' third-quarter onslaught was propelled by a 23-0 run. During that pivotal surge, Jacobs connected on 11-of-13 shots from the field for a blistering 85 percent. Of the 11 baskets, 8 were layups off McHenry turnovers and the Golden Eagles had 9 assists.
Collin Richman scored 9 points including a 3-pointer while Nick Hofman (3 assists) scored 8 and Mike Peterson (3 assists) 6 as the Golden Eagles turned a 9-point halftime lead into a 32-point advantage after 3 quarters, 52-21. Matt Ehrhardt dealt out 3 assists during the run.
Jacobs, which held its biggest lead of the game at 34, 57-23, after a basket by Jamar Roberson with 5:23 left, was led by Hofman with 20 points and 4 assists. Richman added a career-high 13 points with 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
"This was a great way to go out on senior night," said Richman. "Coach told us to play with more intensity on defense in the third quarter and we did. The defense really propelled us in the third quarter. We play defense with a lot of pride. We have very good team chemistry and we do a good job of finding the open man. We feel good going into the regionals. We always have good games with D-C.
Brian Madson, who scored 21 points Tuesday night for McHenry, was held to 11 Friday and just 6 in the first three quarters.
South Elgin 58, Lake Park 50: South Elgin (14-11, 6-6) closed out the Upstate Eight Valley season with a win as Sammy Sutter had 21 points and Dillon Gardner 15. Jake Maestranzi added 9 points for the Storm, who play either DeKalb or St. Charles East on Tuesday in the Class 4A St. Charles East regionall.
Huntley 50, Marengo 30: Dylan Neukirch had 13 points and Jake Dachman added 12 as Huntley (22-4) rolled to a nonconference win. Troy Miller added 11 points for the Red Raiders.
