Collage artists’ work featured at ECC gallery

Daily Herald report

An exhibition featuring the work of collage artists Doug Stapleton and Alexis Mackenzie in on display through Saturday, March 5, in Elgin Community College’s Safety-Kleen Gallery One. The gallery is inside the ECC Arts Center at the college, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Stapleton is an assistant curator of art with the Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery. His work plays with symbols and metaphors from art history, language and religion to create new images that are strongly representational, with an attention to precise cutting and visual consistency, and a nod toward absurd, implied narratives.

In contrast to Stapleton’s work, the collages of Mackenzie are stark Victorian ensembles making use of negative space to form words and phrases. The many botanical flowers, paraphernalia and other organic forms utilized by the San Francisco artist are isolated, yet interconnected through various vines, branches and other materials.
