Dist. 200 expected to move forward on Hubble site

A decision on where to go next in the continuing saga of the old Hubble Middle School site is expected at tonight's Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200 board meeting.

Board President Andy Johnson said he hoped an appraisal determining the land's value will be available during the meeting.

“We are going to have that conversation,” he said. “There might be a vote to move forward with one of the directions.”

The meeting comes one day after Wheaton Park District pushed forward its aggressive efforts to buy the 22-acre site from the school district.

Park officials released schematics of the site that would carve out a 4½-acre parcel for private development. The plan also includes a 4.1-acre area complete with a building that would house three indoor gymnasiums. Additionally, it includes a garden area with features and signage that would serve as a gateway to downtown Wheaton at the corner of Roosevelt Road and Main Street.

Johnson said the park district's plans do not affect his opinion on the sale. He has said in the past he wants to return the parcel to the city's tax rolls.

“It stands the same for us,” Johnson said. “They'd like to purchase the site for fair market value.”

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. tonight at Longfellow Elementary School, 311 W. Seminary Ave., Wheaton.
