Heads-up play lifts St. Viator
St. Viator used its collective heads in its Class 3A boys soccer regional opener Tuesday at Glenbrook North.
All of the fifth-seeded Lions' goals came off headers including Jack Horvath's with just 27 seconds to play in a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Mundelein.
Horvath connected after Viator (17-5-2) came down on a counter and Bill Krawzak made a move near the endline to set up the game-winner.
Krawzak also assisted Jack Simpson's goal to put the Lions up 2-1 in the second half but Mundelein tied the match moments later.
Mundelein scored first but Viator tied it before halftime when Ashwin Cornelius converted Horvath's feed.
Viator plays for the regional title at 2 p.m. Saturday against No. 13 Glenbrook South, which upset No. 4 Glenbrook North 2-1 in the first regional semifinal.
Conant 2, Proviso West 0: Zach Conrad's first-half unassisted goal was all No. 6 Conant (11-8-1) needed in its Elk Grove regional semifinal win. Hugo Gonzalez added a second-half insurance goal off a Mike Natalino feed.
Bobby Potratz had 3 saves for the Cougars, who play No. 3 Elk Grove at 2 p.m. Saturday for the regional title.
