Scouting Vernon Hills at Grant
Vernon Hills (6-0, 4-0) at Grant (3-3, 2-1)
When: 7:30 p.m., today
Last week: Vernon Hills def. Wauconda, 48-0; Grant def. Mundelein, 21-16.
Skinny: Will Grant be the "shutout stopper?" That will be the big question in Fox Lake as the Bulldogs try to become the first team all season to score a point on Vernon Hills, which is rolling over its opponents 290-0 through six weeks. Grant should be a serious threat. The Bulldogs, who have won two games in a row, are averaging 29.7 points per game, third most in the North Suburban Prairie. "Grant always finds a way to play us really tough," Vernon Hills coach Tony Monken said. "If there is a rivalry game for us in the Prairie Division, it's with Grant. Year in and year out, we play each other tough and we have great games. Two years ago, we beat them in the regular season and they beat us in the playoffs. This year, they may be 3-3, but if you look at who they've lost to (Crystal Lake South, Plainfield North and Antioch), all of those teams are playoff teams. We know we have our hands full with Grant."-Grant got past Mundelein last week thanks in part to a standout performance by backup quarterback Alex Villa. He was starting for Leo Minne, who injured his ankle the week before. The Bulldogs are expecting to have Minne back in the starting lineup against Vernon Hills. He adds some speed to Grant's triple option offense-Vernon Hills, which is averaging 48.3 points per game, also runs the triple option. The Cougars have nice balance out of the backfield with Brian Palmer, Marcus Bradford and Austin Miller, but can also pick up big yardage when quarterback Chris Argianas connects with DaVaris Daniels and Evan Spencer, who have already committed to Notre Dame and Ohio State, respectively.
