• Township High School District 214's board of education president William Dussling and Rolling Meadows High School senior and editor-in-chief of the RMHS student newspaper, The Pacer, Jimmy Hibsch, were honored by the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (INSPRA) Friday, May 7 at its Distinguished Service Awards breakfast held at the Meridian Banquets in Rolling Meadows.

Dussling was the Award of Merit recipient in the Board of Education category, while Hibsch received an Award of Excellence in the Student category. Both were nominated for the INSPRA 2010 Distinguished Service Awards by Venetia Miles, community relations director of District 214, as individuals who have consistently "gone the extra mile" on behalf of their schools, and whose efforts have enhanced education and conveyed its importance to the community at large.

• Barbara Bieniek was named Saint Mary's Women's Club's Woman of the Year during the annual St. Mary's Fashion Show held April 17.

Bieniek has been a member of Women's Club for nine years, the past six as the guild leader of St. Lydia's. Under her leadership the guild has raised money for the American Cancer Society, Adopt-a-Family and aided a young lady awaiting a liver transplant. Most recently, Bieniek assisted fire fighters in a St. Baldrick's fundraising project to help children fighting cancer.

• Congratulations to Kildeer resident Kem Pearce, who played the Straits Course at Whistling Straits golf resort in Kohler, Wis. May 22. While using his five iron, Pearce hit a hole in one on hole seven, for a total of 176 yards.

• U-46 principal, Jennifer Bond-Stoever of Heritage Elementary School, has been selected as the Principal of the Year for Hanover Township. The Hanover Township Committee on Youth hosted a reception in her honor May 18.

During her speech Bond-Stoever stated, "It is hard for me to stand here and accept this award because it is the work of many people who make the students at Heritage successful." She went on to thank her staff at the school and the volunteers for their support.

Among the improvement efforts Bond-Stoever has brought to Heritage is the Take One program. Take One requires every teacher at the school to take the first step toward National Board Certification, the highest certification a teacher can achieve.
