ECC still alive in Region IV tourney

The Elgin Community College College baseball team kept its World Series dream alive Saturday by posting a pair of wins in the Region IV Finals in Kankakee.

The Spartans (36-19) knocked off Oakton C.C. in the first game, 11-4. Larkin graduate Luc Geier (5-4) held Oakton to 4 earned runs on 8 hits and struck out 11, and Westminster alum Cory Hodge went 3-for-6 with a 2-run home run. Matt Revelle (Jacobs) finished 4-for-4 and scored 4 runs.

ECC knocked off host Kankakee 9-2 in the second game of the day. St. Charles East's Andy Grunewald (7-2) held Kankakee to 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits in 6 innings. Elgin graduate Tom Roth, Hodge, Dan Scahill and Thomas Wilson each contributed 2 hits.

The Spartans must beat Madison (Wis.) C.C. twice today to advance to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Oklahoma. Both games will be played in Kankakee at noon and 3 p.m. (if necessary). ECC has advanced to the World Series five times in the last six seasons.
