Barrington five-peats at Spring Fling
For the fifth consecutive season, Barrington's softball team claimed the championship of its own Spring Fling tournament.
The Fillies (3-0) posted a 10-2 victory over Zion-Benton as junior Kiley Dolezal (3-0) threw a 5-hitter with 5 strikeouts.
The game was tied 2-2 going into the fifth inning when the Fillies scored 5 runs after two were out.
Colleen Shandley (2-for-4) scored the first run on a wild pitch. Nora Logue then belted a solo homer over the fence in left-center.
Kristin Kuhn (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Jordan Wekony (2-for-3, RBI) and Dolezal all had RBI singles later in the inning.
"Our two-out hitting in the fifth inning was impressive," said Barrington coach Perry Peterson. "That was the difference in the game."
Fremd 13, Grayslake Central 3: Fremd senior Lena Brottman (3-0) was perfect for the first 3 innings, striking out seven.
Coach Jim Weaver then called on two relievers to throw the final 3 innings of the six-inning contest.
"All our pitchers were awesome," said Fremd senior outfielder Jenny Schneider, who went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI and 2 runs. "We are extremely confident but we have to go one game at a time. We don't want to get ahead ourselves."
Fremd sophomore Brittany Ciura was also 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and 1 run. Other multiple hitters for the Vikings were Kristine Werling (2-for-3, 3 steals, 2 runs), Allie Gaeding (2-for-5), Lauren Zaworski (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Megan Hubbard (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI).
The Vikings (3-0) are off until Wednesday when Loyola visits. The Ramblers edged Fremd 1-0 in the Class 4A semifinals last season before Fremd went on to win the third-place game over Naperville Central.
"We're excited," Schneider said. "We get a little break from games so we have to work hard in practice and get ready for Loyola."
Schaumburg 7, Jacobs 3: The Saxons won their season opener behind sophomore Alyssa Lancaster (8 strikeouts, 1 walk). who tossed a 5 hitter.
Senior Theresa McGreevy had a homer and double for the Saxons. Aly Poehlmann, Brianne Lingl and Jessica Cook each doubled for the winners.
Highland Park 5, Rolling Meadows 1: Rolling Meadows' Abby Matayka homered for the Mustangs (0-1) and Maryclare Loughery extended her hitting streak to 19 straight games dating back to last season.
St. Viator 4, Palatine 2: St. Viator opened its season with solid defense and timely hitting. Melanie Slawny (1-0) pitched 5 hitless innings and then picked up the complete-game win.
Julie Sweeney, Abby Dickey (2 RBI) and Kristen Cozzi led the Lions' offense. Bridget Urbanus had a stolen base for St. Viator.
Alyx Ballenger had 2 doubles for Palatine (0-3) while Katie Mnichowicz stole a base.
Glenbrook North 5, Maine West 1: Maine West pitcher Alyssa Bojarski went 3-for-3 with 2 stolen bases at the Spring Fling tourney in Barrington. She also struck out four and did not walk a batter for West (0-3).
