Glenbard South earns sixth straight win
Next season Glenbard South will join Fenton in the Metro Suburban Conference.
Tuesday night, though, the separation remained.
"We certainly look forward to them joining us," said Fenton coach Dennis Cromer. "But tonight we weren't in their league."
The late-season surge by Glenbard South's boys basketball continued in the face of one of Fenton's worst nights. The Raiders rolled to a 59-41 nonconference victory in Bensenville to claim their sixth straight win.
Glenbard South (14-10) has won nine of 11 games in 2010.
"It's just basically the hard work we've been putting in at practice," said Raiders center Dylan Rheault. "It's paying off. We're starting to come together as a team."
The improved play couldn't come at a better time for Glenbard South, which opens the postseason in the Class 3A Riverside-Brookfield sectional next Tuesday. If the Raiders beat Raby in the regional semifinals they'll face state-ranked Marshall on the Commandos' home court.
Glenbard South obviously wants to be playing its best heading into a brutal playoff draw.
"We've been coming into our own," said Raiders coach Wade Hardtke. "Since January we've been playing very well. I think we've seen some consistent improvement each and every game, and that's exactly what you want going into the tournament next week."
Leading 15-8 after one quarter, Glenbard South used an 8-0 run to build a commanding lead. Fenton (9-16) experienced major turnover trouble, committing 10 of its 20 in the second quarter alone.
With limited and shortened possessions, the Bison managed only 5 shots in the second quarter. They made only one of them as Glenbard South built a 28-12 halftime lead.
"The last three or four games we just can't score," Cromer said. "I'm really disappointed in how we played early. There was some doubt whether we'd break 30 late in the game."
A 10-2 run to start the third quarter put Glenbard South ahead 38-14. Rheault, who scored 16 points, and Mike Rovansek, who scored a game-high 17 points, accounted for all 10 points.
Fenton's Zach Piotrowski hit four second-half 3-pointers while scoring a team-high 12 points.
"We're just getting better and better as a team," Rheault said. "It's great timing."
