A veteran writer and editor, Kevin Schmit is the Associate Sports Editor for the Daily Herald. While his responsibilities include production of the newspaper, Schmit also writes two columns a week focusing on high school sports.
Schmit was hired by the Daily Herald in 1997 as a high school sports writer. Before being hired by the Daily Herald, Schmit spent seven years as a freelance writer for the newspaper.
In addition to being named sports writer of the year by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association and the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association, Schmit was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2022. He also was named to the West Suburban Conference's Honor Roll to commemorate the league's 100th anniversary.
Schmit was a news writer for the Daily Herald from 2020 to 2023. In 2022, he earned first-place honors from the Illinois Press Association in Government Beat Reporting.
A graduate of Buffalo Grove High School, Schmit received a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
