Controversial Victorian feminist's life reviewed in Harper event

Victoria Woodhull, a firecracker and controversial personality of the Victorian era, will be portrayed by Jeanmarie Dwyer-Wrigley for Women Make History Month at Harper College at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3 in a free event.

Dwyer-Wrigley, who is active in community theater productions, is also a storyteller, and dance instructor. She has lectured about women's issues and helped found A Woman's Place, a drop-in center for homeless women in Chicago.

Woodhull, the character Dwyer-Wrigley will portray, was a supporter of women's right to vote and hold public office, and was nominated to run as a candidate for President of the United States by the National Women Suffrage Association in 1872. Woodhull's running mate was Frederick Douglass.

She was, ironically, arrested on Election Day.

Scandals regarding Woodhull's love affairs, her finances, libel charges, and other troubles have obscured Woodhull's role in women's history, says Dwyer-Wrigley. The event will take place in the Drama Lab, Room L109, Building L, Roselle and Algonquin Roads, Palatine.

Free parking in Lot #2 is most convenient.
