Fremd, Madden sisters have all the answers
Fremd has been filling in the blanks all season with its versatile lineup, and it was no different for the Viking attack at Monday's Schaumburg sectional.
And St. Edward freshman Abby Madden had all the right answers.
Fremd once again used the team approach in winning its 15th sectional title with 146.075 points.
"It's been a team effort from the very beginning," said Fremd coach Jim Guest of the Vikings, who will be making their 25th appearance at the state meet Feb. 19 at Palatine High School. "When called upon, the kids have been prepared and ready, stepped in and done an admirable job."
Abby Madden competes as an individual for St. Edward, but the freshman shined by taking first in the all-around with a 37.20, adding a first on the vault (9.475) and floor (9.40), taking fourth on bars (9.375) and tying for sixth on balance beam (8.9).
"It's amazing," added Abby of her all-around title. "I thought I had a chance, but I knew I had to hit on each event. After floor and vault, I knew I had to nail my bar routine if I wanted first - it worked."
Abby's sister Jordyn also came up big for the Green Wave, taking second on vault (9.45) and placing sixth in the all-around (36.5).
"I felt really confident on the vault," said Jordyn, who was a state finalist on vault last year. "This year I'm more familiar with what's going on, what's coming next. Each year I want to do better and better."
So far, so good for the Madden sisters.
For Fremd it was someone different on each event. Junior Maegan Wochinski took third in the all-around (36.625) and added a third on beam (9.25) and vault (9.4).
Senior Caitlin Golota tied for sixth in the all-around (36.50), taking third on the bars (9.425) and fourth on the beam (9.05).
"Everyone stepped up, it's not that one person," added Golota, "We have the depth - that's what gets us through."
Sophomore Stephanie Uhrich tied for second on floor (9.35), and Junior Kelsey Onesto opened plenty of eyes by taking second on beam (9.325).
"We've all been working really hard," added Onesto of the Vikings attack. "I think it showed tonight. We don't really have a star on the team, but all together we do pretty well."
Junior Brooke Shimon and sophomore Ashley Miller came up big for Schaumburg.
Miller took fifth in the all-around (36.575) despite a fall on the floor. The sophomore continued her lethal attack on the bars (9.525) by taking first.
"I'm really confident," said Miller of her bar routine. "That is one of the events I'm most excited about. If I hit I feel I'll do really well, it's just exciting to keep moving forward."
Shimon has come back from a broken ankle, which affected her floor routine early. But the senior was solid on Monday, taking fifth on the floor (9.325).
"Getting my tumbling and endurance back was the hardest part," said Miller, who qualified for state last year on the floor. "That event is my comfort zone."
Buffalo Grove's Linda Dunne took fourth in the all-around (36.60), first on beam (9.4), fourth on vault (9.35), and fifth on bars (9.375).
"I didn't give myself an option of falling off," said Dunne of her beam routine. "I just wanted it."
Prospect Katie Colmone also wanted it. She took second on the bars (9.475) and added a fifth on beam (9.025).
"I had to take it slow this season," said Colmone, who has dealt with a nagging back injury all season. "But I think it paid off at the end."
Freshman Margaret Kania also came up big by advancing on floor (9.35), tying for second place.
Amy Burke will make her first state appearance for Wheeling after tying for fourth on the vault (9.35).
"It's definitely nice to make it," added Burke, "It wasn't my best meet, but you take what you can get."
