Jacobs gets past Huntley in OT
With 12 seconds to go, Huntley's Kadie Lowery nailed a 3-pointer to cap a furious rally and force overtime with Jacobs. The extra period, though, was rather anticlimactic. The Golden Eagles held Huntley scoreless and escaped with a 65-53 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball victory in Huntley Tuesday night.
Haley Cnota scored 5 of her 8 points in the extra period as Jacobs outscored Huntley 12-0.
Sierra Dunner had 19 points and 14 rebounds for Jacobs, while Maria Tamburrino contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Huntley never led and trailed 49-40 with about 2 minutes to go. The Raiders chipped away by fouling the Eagles, who obliged by missing free throws. They made just 8 of 17 in the fourth quarter. Then Hillary Johnson took an inbounds pass from Rachel Chapuis and fed Lowery for the tying basket.
But the fouls took their toll on Huntley. Tsevas fouled out at the end of regulation, and Chapuis and Johnson quickly joined her on the bench once the overtime started. That left the Raiders with few offensive options and Jacobs (21-7, 7-1) took advantage. Dunner scored on a putback and, after a steal by Kelsey Quitschau, Cnota scored inside for a 57-53 lead.
There was no big secret to the Eagles' success in overtime.
"We just put in our free throws, that's one thing, and played better 'D,' " said Dunner. "And we got it."
"I would have liked to have done a little better job at the free throw line tonight," said Jacobs coach Ed Haugens. "But give Huntley all the credit, they battled hard."
Johnson led Huntley with 17 points. Lowery added 16 and Cece Tsevas scored 10.
"They showed some mental toughness and physical toughness in grinding it out down the stretch there," said Huntley coach Steve Raethz. "Obviously, we're disappointed with the outcome. You hate to lose that game, but I was very pleased with how we stuck with it there in regulation."
For the game, Jacobs made 26 of 41 free throws, led by Tamburrino, who was 9-for-10. Huntley, for its part, stayed in the game with 3-point shooting. Lowery made 4 bombs and Tsevas 3.
McHenry 51, Dundee-Crown 33: Ali Sanders scored 17 points to lead the Chargers in this FVC Valley loss.
