Glenbard East rockets past Wheaton North
If Glenbard East resembled a rocket taking off in the second quarter Friday night, it's because Johnny Hill lit the fuse.
Hill's 18-point second quarter lifted the Rams to a 93-62 victory against Wheaton North in Lombard.
"He was great," Rams coach Scott Miller said. "It's a tribute to all our guys. They've got a knack for when a guy is hot recognizing it on the court and making sure he gets the ball in his hands where he can do things."
Wheaton North led 24-23 just more than 10 minutes into the game when Hill scored to start the Rams on a 25-5 run to finish the first half.
"It was a turning point that we had to turn it up," Hill said. "(The Falcons) were coming out and playing aggressive, and we had to play aggressive with them."
"They're a good team," Falcons coach Jim Nazos said of the Rams. "We're trying to get there. We're working to get there right now. They definitely capitalized on some turnovers and some putbacks."
The Falcons (7-10, 2-5 DuPage Valley Conference) scored 8 of the third quarter's first 10 points, but the Rams (16-1, 7-0) got the message and got going, with Zach Miller finding Lee Skinner for 4 baskets and Skinner returning the favor on another.
"In the third quarter I think they were focused on me a lot more and that opened it up for other guys," Hill said.
"Since we've come out of Christmas we haven't really shot the ball well," coach Miller said, "and we talked about that we really wanted to come out and shoot the ball well tonight, and obviously I thought we did that."
The only worry for the Rams was their free-throw shooting. They finished 11 of 24.
"We're over 70 percent from the line, so that's uncharacteristic," Scott Miller said.
Skinner finished with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals.
"I thought this was the best game Lee's played all year," Scott Miller added. "He was a monster on the glass. His shot's starting to come around. He was effective in all facets of the game. He was at the back of our press making steals, he was at the front of our press making steals."
Hill had 22 points, all in the first half, to go with 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Zach Miller added 14 points and 8 assists.
Mike Fitzpatrick led the Falcons with 13 points and Jeff Schalk added 12.
The 93 points tied the Rams' highest total of the year. They also scored 93 against Larkin in December. The Rams take on Jacobs at 4:30 p.m. today at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates on the 13th annual High School Hoops Showdown.
