Now is the time to seek financial aid
If college is in your plans for 2010, it's important to begin applying for financial aid as early as possible. Beginning this month, families and students can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as the "FAFSA." Even if your college plans are uncertain, it's critical to submit the FAFSA form. Here's why: it's free, it's the one application for free money from both the federal and state governments, it's the one application for zero interest student loans, it's the one application that all colleges and universities use in awarding financial aid.
The FAFSA form is available online at fafsa.gov. The online version has several advantages.
First, it double-checks your math, which can be a source of frequent mistakes. Also, the student or the parent need only answer questions that are relevant to their individual circumstances. You don't have to have filed your 2009 IRS form to file a FASFA, but it certainly helps.
To save time, the student or parent filer simply can use the work sheets within the form as a practice before submitting the actual FAFSA online.
Because of these rough economic times, financial circumstances have changed for many individuals and families. If the 2009 tax return does not reflect your current financial situation, the professionals within the student financial assistance office will make you aware of your special circumstance option.
Meeting college costs is a partnership between the applicant and the school. Don't delay going to college because of uncertainty about college costs. Contact your college or university Office of Student Financial Assistance for the best advice.
