Class teaches kids how to create glass ornaments

A Mundelein glassmaking studio and a suburban community college teamed to teach children about the delicate art of glassblowing during the holiday season.

About 11 young participants at the workshop, held over three days in December at Patterson Glass in Mundelein, learned how different types of glass art are made. They also got to make their own pieces of decoration glass that were turned into ornaments and other items.

"Some of those we made into pins or magnets," said Sue Esson, the studio manager at Patterson Glass. "And one of those we put back into the kiln, and they made a round paperweight out of it."

Harper College in Palatine sponsored the program.

The workshop exposed the children to an art form they might only learn a little about when attending a local art fair with their parents, Esson said.

"They all had a great time," she said.

Patterson Glass features the work of artist Peter Patterson, but public studio time is available by reservation. Artists also lead a variety of classes on glassblowing and related subjects.
