Cannon, Wheeling steal a win

Senior guard Janelle Cannon and her Wheeling girls basketball team stole a 55-32 victory over Deerfield in Monday's second-round action at the Blue Devil Classic in Gurnee.

Cannon recorded 12 steals to go with her game-high 23 points as the Wildcats improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the Warren tournament.

Cannon also pulled down 8 rebounds with 2 assists for the defending champions, who trailed 32-31 after three quarters before outscoring the Warriors 24-3 in the final eight minutes.

The Wildcats surrendered only one 3-point basket in the fourth quarter.

Senior forward Larisa Aguero enjoyed one of her finest games, collecting 12 points. 8 rebounds and 2 steals for Wheeling, while classmate Stephanie Kuzmanic tossed in 10 points with 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Senior Bianca Szafarowicz was tough on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds. The All-Area forward also scored 7 points, 6 steals and 3 assists.

Barrington 45, Loyola 35: Barrington (8-5, 1-1 in the Suburban Holiday Showcase) received 14 points and 4 3-pointers from Abby Kirchoff.

Emily Harris collected 10 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists while Sarah Mass had 9 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Brooke Chandor pulled down 4 rebounds with 2 steals.

"Our rebounding in the first half was probably our best all season," said Fillies coach Babbi Barreiro. "Emily (Harris) played well at both ends of the floor. And a lot of people made contributions."

St. Viator 47, Maine East 19: St. Viator improved to 9-4 with its second win in the Lions' own 27th annual Snowflake Classic.

Leading the way were Taylor Skala (12 points, 5 steals, 3 assists, 2 rebounds), Ronnie Mack (11 points, 2 steals) and Emily Leazer (8 points, 2 rebounds).

Mary Calov had 3 blocked shots and 3 rebounds, while Bridget Urbanus collected 7 steals, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

"It was a great all-around effort both offensively and defensively," said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness. "We had a balanced attack and held them down in scoring."

Rockford Auburn 58, Hoffman Estates 54 (OT): Rockford Auburn edged the Hawks 8-4 in the extra session of the second-round game of the Mundelein tourney.

Senior Megan Bernardoni scored 21 points (3 3-pointers) to lead Hoffman, while Kelsey Lukowicz added 11, including three 3 -pointers. Jada Stotts added 8 points for the Hawks (9-4, 1-1 in the tourney).

Cary-Grove 47, Rolling Meadows 30: Rolling Meadows (4-7, 0-2) was led by sophomore guard Ann Marie Lynch's 11 points in the second-round game of the Mundelein tournament.

Conant 44, Glenbrook North 24: Senior Ashley Lindeman scored 13 points and Kim Davis added 7 for the Cougars (3-9), who evened their record at 1-1 in the Mundelein tournament.

Schaumburg 68, West Aurora 61: Senior Taylor Kosla (19 points), junior Rachel Stuehm (11), Alyssa Saklak (11) and Alexis Carrevetta (9) led Schaumburg (3-10) to its win in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket of the Wheaton North tournament.

Grayslake Central 55, Palatine 43: Freshman Nia Pappas led Palatine (3-8, 1-1) with 14 points (2 3-pointers) at the Warren tourneament.
