Moraine Valley sweeps at Harper

It was a game of runs Tuesday night as Moraine Valley (2-2) visited Harper College (3-2) in women's basketball.

The Cyclones came away with a 52-38 win.

Moraine Valley ran off to a 8-0 lead and was able to extend the lead to 10 points at 14-4 with 12:24 left in the first half.

But the Hawks where able to cut the lead to 3 at 27-24 going into the half.

After that, every time the Hawks had a chance to tie or take the lead, the Cyclones seemed to come up with a basket.

Harper guard Peggy Parhas (Lake Zurich) fouled out with 8:36 remaining in the contest.

"I thought we had some pretty good looks in the high post," said Hawks coach Mark Smith. "We would make a run and they would fight back."

Smith and his crew get their next chance Thursday against College of Lake County.

• It was a battle of wills in a back-and-forth men's contest at Harper College on Tuesday night, with the Hawks falling 91-82.

After getting off to a sluggish start, the Hawks (2-2) took a 47-47 tie into the locker room.

The Cyclones went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 78-72.

After sitting on the bench most of the second half with 3 fouls 6-foot-8 Miami of Ohio transfer Dwight Cobs proved to be to much to handle for the Hawks, finishing with 22 points.

Floyd Battle led Harper in scoring with 19 points off the bench.

"He's a good player," Harper coach Tony Amarino said of Cobs. "Their pressure gave us a little trouble in the beginning."

The key to the outcome, according to Amarino, was that the Hawks did not get defensive stops when it needed to. The Hawks travel to number 5-ranked Division II Kishwaukee Thursday.
