Lawsuit filed over Harper postgame attack
A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a Kansas City, Mo., man who said he was punched in the face while watching his nephew play in Harper College's football bowl game last December.
According to the suit, Jimmy Lee Renfro traveled with his family to Arizona to watch Phoenix College play Harper in the Sun Bowl. Following the game, which Harper won, the Phoenix wide receiver "went into the stands and brutally attacked" Renfro, according to the suit.
The suit states that Tevita Ofa, who is now believed to live in Hawaii, repeatedly struck Renfro with closed fists. Renfro's face, head and right eye swelled and the attack resulted in visual impairment that continues today, it said.
Both Ofa and the Maricopa County Community College District which operates the school have been named defendants. The suit states Maricopa was negligent for failing to prevent the football players from entering the stands.
The suit, which was filed in Maricopa County, Ariz., doesn't specify a set amount in damages sought. It's unclear what prompted the attack. Calls to Renfro's attorney and Maricopa County Community College District weren't immediately returned.
