Fox Valley area players eliminated

Rain was the big winnert at the IHSA girls state tennis tournament Thursday.

The bad weather forced the tournament indoors and canceled the backdraw. With all of the Fox Valley area participants losing in the first round, the area is now left void of tennis action for the remaining two days of the state finals.

In singles play, Hampshire senior Kate Hougland fell in the opening round to Rockford Boylan's Brianna Markgraf 6-2, 6-0, while Elgin freshman Jacey Sirinit lost to New Trier's Alana Peters 6-4, 7-5. Elgin Academy senior Bianca Swegler was defeated by Rosary's Emily Reuland 6-0, 6-0, and Streamwood's Jennifer Mellenthin lost to Downers Grove North's Claire McNulty 6-0, 6-0. Crystal Lake South's Marisa Thome also bowed out, falling to Lake Forest's Maddie Lipp 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles action, Huntley's Sam Chapman-Ashley Pietrusiak lost to Jessie Bertino and Harley Hutchison of Joliet Catholic 6-1, 6-0, while Jacobs' Marcilyn Rowan-Lauren Steinkamp fell to Mariah Bardo and Victoria Packer of Sterling 7-6 (6), 7-5. CL South's Rachel Boorom-Rachel Siemon lost to Benet's Kelly Carney-Joyce Hanlon 6-2, 6-1, and Hampshire's Kelsey Burke-Vanassa Patthana were defeated by downstate Morton's Paige Clayton-Ashley Martin 6-1, 6-1.

Deerfield leads the team standings after the first day with 14 points, but Barrington, Lake Forest, Glenbrook North and New Trier all have 12 points to tie for second place.
