Jacobs falls to McHenry
With 3 minutes and 41 seconds left in the first half, Jacobs trailed McHenry 7-6.
Within the blink of an eye, actually it was 3 minutes and 14 seconds, the Golden Eagles fate changed dramatically.
Aided by a safety, McHenry scored the final 16 points of the half en route to a 37-12 win over the Golden Eagles in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game in Algonquin Friday night.
After McHenry's drive stalled at the Jacobs 1-yard line, the Golden Eagles took over the ball. On the first play of the series, the Golden Eagles' Kyle Wright was tackled in the end zone by McHenry's Jeff Beres to give the Warriors a 9-6 lead.
"That safety seemed to give them a lot of momentum and it shouldn't have," said Jacobs coach Dean Schlueter. "Then, they hit us with a flurry at the end of the half. We just make too many mistakes to beat a good team like McHenry."
It was more like on a onslaught than a flurry as McHenry quarterback Thomas Rose threw 2 touchdown passes in the final 2:18 of the half.
He connected with Corey Szamlewski for a 58-yard score and Trevor Marunde for a 25-yard touchdown. The Warriors (4-4, 3-1) held a 23-6 lead at halftime.
"That safety got us going and we put the gas to the pedal the rest of the half," said McHenry coach Tim Beagle. "We struggled with the passing game most of the half, but we hit some passes at the end of the half. We played a really good second half offensively and defensively."
Rose gouged the Jacobs defense for 348 yards passing, completing 29-of-39 attempts, which included 4 TD strikes.
Szamlewski caught 7 passes for 178 yards and 2 scores while Marunde caught 8 passes for 51 yards, which included 2 touchdown receptions.
McHenry also added 117 yards on the ground including 99 by Dana Kohn, which included a 49-yard touchdown scamper. The Warriors, which accounted for 23 first downs, accumulated 465 yards of total offense.
One of the few bright spots for Jacobs (2-6, 1-4) was the play of junior receiver Joey Cieniewicz, who caught TD passes of 10 and 11 yards from sophomore quarterback Jason Judson.
Judson completed 7-of-16 passes for 111 yards and 2 scores. Zach Bates corralled 4 passes for 55 yards and Cieniewicz caught 3 passes for 56 yards and 2 TDs.
