Fire hydrant flush
Batavia is flushing fire hydrants, to rid water pipes of sediment, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Flushing east of the Fox River is now through Oct. 16. Check water before washing clothes, as rusty water is possible.
Weigh in on rail plan
The Illinois Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, to gather input on an environmental assessment of the proposed alternatives for new passenger rail service from Chicago to Dubuque, Iowa. The meeting will be at the Northern Illinois University Outreach Center, 8500 E. State St., Rockford. It will be an open house format with a looping PowerPoint presentation and exhibits. Kane clerk closing
The Kane County clerk's office will be closed Oct. 12 for Columbus Day, and reopening at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 13. For more information, call (630) 232-5950.
Register for fall classes
Registration for eight-week credit classes, which begin Oct. 19 at Elgin Community College, will continue until classes start, space permitting. Students with an ECC identification number can register online at elgin.edu/accessecc. Registration can be made in person at the registration center in Room 165 of the Student Resource Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. The registration center is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students must provide proof of having met course prerequisites, if documentation is not already on file at ECC. Gifts for military personnel
Aurora again will send gifts to residents in active military service who are stationed in the U.S. or overseas. Service personnel will receive a one-pound box of mixed nuts provided by the Kiwanis Club of Aurora and a card in time for the holidays. Names and mailing addresses of residents in active military service may be given to the Mayor's Office of Special Events at (630) 844-4731 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays or e-mailed to syoung@aurora-il.org. The deadline is Nov. 13.
