Watch for big pavers

Concrete paving will begin this week on New Stearns Road, west of Route 25. Drivers can expect to see large construction equipment entering and leaving Route 25 south of Gilbert Street in South Elgin. This will occur for one or two days.

Fire hydrant flush

Batavia is flushing fire hydrants, to rid water pipes of sediment, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. this month and in October. Flushing west of the Fox River continues through Friday, east of the river will be flushed Oct. 5-16. Check water before washing clothes, as rusty water is possible.

Join women's chorus

Misty River Music Makers, a local women's chorus, is hosting its Fall Friendship and Fun guest night at 7 p.m. tonight at the Park National Bank, 808 W. State St., Geneva. No need to read music, just an ability to hold down a tune and have some fun through singing. For details, call Cynthia at (630) 306-9340.

Gifts for military personnel

Aurora will send gifts to residents in active military service who are stationed in the U.S. or overseas. Service personnel will receive a one-pound box of mixed nuts provided by the Kiwanis Club of Aurora and a card in time for the holidays. Names and mailing addresses of residents in active military service may be given to the Mayor's Office of Special Events at (630) 844-4731 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays or e-mailed to syoung@aurora-il.org. The deadline is Nov. 13.

Register for fall classes

Open registration for fall credit classes at Elgin Community College will continue until classes start, space permitting. Eight-week classes begin the week of Oct. 19. Students with an ECC identification number can register online at elgin.edu/accessecc. Registration can be made in person at the registration center in Room 165 of the Student Resource Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. The center is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students must provide proof of having met course prerequisites, if documentation is not already on file at ECC. For details, visit elgin.edu/register.
