Internet courses in psychology offered at ECC
Elgin Community College offers two psychology credit courses this fall allowing students to attend classes from the convenience of home, office or any Internet-ready location.
Intro to Psychology will be held from 5 to 6:40 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 22.
Human Growth and Development will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays beginning Aug. 28.
Taught by Shawn Mikulay, associate professor of psychology, both classes meet in Second Life, where students and the instructor interact as avatars in a 3-D world. Classes meet at scheduled meeting times, and Mikulay and students use headsets, microphone and voice communication software to interact.
Credits earned in the classes are easily-transferrable and may be used to fulfill a major requirement or behavioral service requirement.
Other flexible learning options offered at ECC include:
• Online classes are held where students interact with their classmates and instructors, obtain and complete homework assignments, take exams and quizzes. Courses are facilitated through the Desire2Learn course management system.
• Hybrid classes blend traditional classroom instruction with online instruction. Students meet on campus with their instructor one to two days each week and take the remainder of classes online. This option is ideal for students seeking to reduce their commutes to campus.
• Telecourses incorporate independent study by videos and textbooks to complete assignments and take exams. Communication between students and instructors is facilitated through D2L.
• Weekend College features traditional in-class study on Fridays and Saturdays. Students can enroll in five-week, eight-week or 16-week courses at ECC's main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Classes include both career-technical offerings intended for immediate employment and those meeting general education requirements for transfer to virtually any college or university.
