Batavia blood drive:

The City of Batavia will have a blood drive from noon to 4 p.m. today in the council chambers at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. Call Stacy Schilling at (630) 454-2070 if you wish to make an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome.

Provena Geneva open house:

Provena Geneva Care Center is having an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. today to show its new private rooms, which include microwave ovens, refrigerators and seating areas. It is at 1101 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva.

Free ice cream:

The Geneva Public Library and the Geneva History Center will have the "We're Wild About Geneva" free ice cream social from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday on the lawn of the Kane County Courthouse, 100 S. Third St. Highlights include presentations by Willowbrook Wildlife Center about "Two Kane County Snakes You Should Know" at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., as well as face painting and balloon creatures courtesy of Around the Town Entertainment. Ministry hosts day of fun:

H.E.L.P.S. Ministry will host "Meet in the Street and Eat '09" from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at The HELPS Ministry Community Center, 6N539 Tuscola, St. Charles. At this old-fashioned revival, with the theme, "God's Stimulus Plan," come say goodbye to summertime with live music, 3-on-3 basketball, face painting, clowns, games, attractions, contests, great food, refreshments, a late night movie with popcorn and more. Cancer rock show:

"Jam For a Cure," to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, is at 3 p.m. Saturday at Polivka's Groovy Farm, 39W462 Seavey Road, Batavia. Local bands including Jykes, Disbarre and Flavor will perform. Tickets are $40 for adults, $20 for ages 11 to 20 and free to those 10 and younger. ECC employee lauded:

Mark Carriveau, an Elgin Community College electronic imaging specialist, was recognized for his service as a member of the University Photographers' Association of America. Carriveau, of West Chicago, received the Distinguished Service Award from the association June 29. Founded in 1961 by a group of New England-area college photographers, the association has evolved into an international organization of more than 260 members who hail from colleges and universities across the United States, Canada, Australia and Israel. The association addresses the application and practice of photography as it relates to higher education. Carriveau has worked at ECC since 1996.
