'Celebrate Chicago Music' at Harper
Harper College will offer samplings of folk, blues and jazz at its "Celebrate Chicago Music" weekend - a trio of concerts aimed at toasting the Windy City's musical diversity.
The series kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 17 with Rick Neeley, a master of the five-string banjo and 12-string guitar, in a tribute to folk legend Bob Gibson, in Room A238, Building A.
Jazz flutist Nicole Mitchell brings her quartet to Harper at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, for an improvisational jazz concert in the Performing Arts Center.
Billy Branch, a regular at blues clubs who has recorded and performed with Muddy Waters and Lonnie Brooks among others, will round out the weekend with a 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19 performance with his Sons of Blues Band in Harper's Performing Arts Center. Tickets to the Friday performance are $17 for general admission. Tickets to the Saturday and Sunday concerts are $25 for general admission, with discounts in all cases for senior citizens and students. Applications are now available for the Mount Prospect Public Library's first-ever Battle of the Bands competition held May 16. Musicians 19 or under who are in a musical group, band or orchestra, must submit an application by April 30 to compete for an opportunity to play to a live audience and win prizes.

Willow Creek hosts career expo April 28
High schools in Districts 211, 214 and 220; the Northwest Education to Careers Partnership and Harper College will sponsor Career Expo 2009 from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at the Willow Creek Activity Center, 67 E. Algonquin Road, South Barrington. All Career Expo activities are open to students and parents, and are free.
Career Expo 2009 will help students gather information on career options, research career fields and the educational requirements needed to pursue them. More than 100 traditional career professionals, plus those representing opportunities projected to offer the greatest employment growth, will be there. The Arlington Chippers Ladies Nine Hole Golf League has openings for new members and subs to play 8:15 a.m. Thursday mornings April 23-Sept. 3, at Arlington Lakes Golf Club in Arlington Heights.
