Dist. 129 candidate withdraws

Anthony Stanford officially withdrew late last week from the West Aurora School District 129 race, citing personal and professional commitments that will not allow him to contribute the time necessary to serve on the board. The remaining candidates for the three seats to be contested in the April 7 election are Neal Ormond, Jonathan Wood, Robert Littler and Mark Bradford.

Conifers seminar

A seminar on conifers Saturday in Campton Hills will raise money for a local animal shelter. Captivating Conifers in the Midwest is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Wasco Nursery & Garden Center, 41W781 Route 64. The presentation feature Alans Craig, a representative of Oregon-based Iseli Nursery who will discuss care and presentation of various conifers. Admission is $5 with proceeds going to Anderson Animal Shelter. For a reservation, call (630) 584-4424.

Transition planning

St. Charles East High School will host the Post-Secondary Transition Planning Night for students with disabilities and their families from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Feb. 25 at 1040 Dunham Road. Students and families from the St. Charles, Batavia, Geneva, Kaneland, Burlington, West Chicago and U-46 school districts, and the Mid-Valley Cooperative, are welcome. Families can receive information from colleges, vocational schools, adult agencies, day and residential programs, recreation and transportation service providers.

Celebrate Black history

]In celebration of Black History Month, Waubonsee Community College's African Cultural Alliance will present "A Timeline of Tradition and Heritage" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the auditorium of the college's Sugar Grove Campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive. Finance report wins award

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has given the City of Batavia Finance Department the Certificate for Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its comprehensive annual financial report for the year ending Dec. 31, 2007. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. More information can be found at www.cityofbatavia.net.
