Candlelight ski in McHenry Co.

For some, winter has long overstayed its welcome, but for others it has been a great opportunity to get out and enjoy McHenry County Conservation District's Candlelight Cross Country Ski nights.

Weather permitting, on Feb. 6-7, the Candlelight Ski will be held at Prairieview, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake. Call (815) 338-6223 or visit www.MCCDistrict.org the Thursday before for an up-to-date report on ski conditions.

"Rush Creek is perfect for beginners because the trail is relatively flat. The 1-mile loop travels through oak woodland, creating a nice scenic backdrop. The more advanced skiers will circle a few times, take a break by the campfire and then head out again," said Perry Weborg, land and facilities supervisor. "So far this winter we've had three excellent weekends of good ski weather that have attracted over 200 skiers out to enjoy the trails. We'll have anywhere from 50 to 75 skiers a night depending on the weather."

Candlelight skis are offered every Friday and Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. weather conditions permitting and rotate to different sites around the county. After some brisk, refreshing exercise visitors can enjoy refreshments around the campfire. Skiers need to provide their own equipment. Skiers of every level and age are welcome.

In addition to the candlelight skis, the district offers over 40 miles of cross country ski trails for visitors to enjoy on their own at 14 sites throughout the county. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy groomed trails at Glacial Park in Ringwood (6 miles), Hickory Grove in Cary (1.5 miles), The Hollows in Cary (2.75 miles), Marengo Ridge in Marengo (4.5 miles), Prairieview Education Center in Crystal Lake (4 miles), and Rush Creek in Harvard (3 miles).
