MSL West showdown set

The Mid-Suburban West showdown is set.

With victories on Tuesday night, Hoffman Estates and Fremd's girls basketball teams remained tied for first and will play for the championship at 8 p.m. Friday on the Hawks' floor.

The boys game will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Both girls teams are 8-1 in the West heading into their final league game of the season.

Fremd is seeking its first West crown since 2004 when it had won for the fourth straight year. Hoffman is seeking its first divisional title since 1992, when it won back-to-back crowns.

In their first meeting this season, Fremd defeated Hoffman 45-34 in Palatine.

Hoffman 51, Schaumburg 39: Senior Megan Fischer broke Mandy Mennella's all-time school record of 1,485 points by scoring a game-high 24 for the Hawks (23-1, 8-1), who won their 18th straight game.

Fischer now has 1,504 career points.

Junior Megan Bernardoni added 9 points for the Hawks while sophomore Jada Stotts added 7.

Top scorer for the Saxons (7-19, 2-7) was senior Sarah Kellermeyer with 18 points.

"Hoffman played great and so did Megan Fischer," said Saxons coach Jay Colloton. "It was our Senior's Night and our three seniors all scored."

The others were Sarah McGinn (8 points) and Siobhan Cerney (1 point).

Fremd 30, Palatine 22: In a defensive battle, Fremd (17-6, 8-1) was led by junior Taylor Glassman, who scored 11 points with three 3-pointers.

Gianna Abruzzo added 9 and sophomore Megan Gray for the Vikings, who led 18-14 heading into the final quarter.

But they were able to steer clear in the final quarter as Sam Thelin scored a driving layup and the Vikings made 8 of 11 free throws, including 3 by Gray.

Palatine (3-25, 0-9) was led by Alexis Bauer's 9 points.

Barrington 31, Conant 28: Senior Jenny Schnack scored 16 points to lead the Fillies (17-10, 6-3) in the MSL West contest.

Conant (14-11, 3-6) received 10 points from Lauren Jason and 7 from Emma Loos.

"Conant played great defensively and rebounded very well," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "We did not get the job done on the boards and that is something we are going to have to move forward with. I'm always proud that the kids play hard but we did not execute the fundamentals of rebounding."

Elk Grove 53, BG 44: Junior Ashley Capotosto, one of the leading scorers in the area, tossed in game-high 24 points in the MSL East game. Kristy Ottosen added 13 points for the Grenadiers (12-11, 4-5).
