Barrington growing, and winning
Growing pains ... that's what the Barrington wrestling program is going through this season.
Broncos coach Al Strobl says that when his club is on, it's really on.
On Thursday night, the Broncos spent half the evening going forward, the other half in neutral.
But when all was said and done, the host Broncos (15-5) defeated Lake Park 33-25 in the teams' annual nonconference dual meet.
"Tonight was kind of typical of the way our season has gone so far," Strobl said. "Part of our lineup is on (track) and wrestling really, really well... and the other half is struggling at the same time.
"It can be a little frustrating, but you also have to remember this is still a very young team, who is still capable of doing some wonderful things. I guess it's all part of the growing process."
On senior and kid club night, the Broncos - who earlier in the season won the Dick Mudge tournament championship - featured just one senior (Beau Conrad) in its starting lineup.
But the Broncos built a 33-13 lead before hitting a few speed bumps in the final three matches.
After falling behind 7-0, the Broncos went on a 30-point run fueled by falls from Steve Polasik (140), Ryne McQueen (160) and Ian Krowitz at 189.
In between, Erwin Delarosa (145), Luke Miller (152) and Dan Santoro, who defeated Justin Kang by an injury default after a throw, all contributed to the Broncos' explosion.
The Lancers' Peter Demars stopped the bleeding for a moment with a 13-3 major decision at 215, and teammates Mat Astacio, Anthony Scorzo and Mike DeSario gave the visitors victories at the end.
Joe Rovituso and Adrian Gonzalez (23-4) provided the crowd perhaps the most enjoyable bout at 103 pounds. The state-ranked freshman Gonzalez held off Rovituso, who drew close at 7-6 with 30 seconds left.
Robert Babej (24-7) who earned the top seed at the upcoming Upstate Eight tournament at 130 pound, began the night for the Lancers with an impressive 14-1 major over Joe Adriani.
