Lake Park High just gets by Bartlett High
After a steal and layup from Alex Tovella, the Bartlett Hawks had Lake Park in a position not seen by the Lancers too often: a deficit in the fourth quarter.
However, with 4:55 remaining in the game, the Hawks lost sophomore Jacki Gulczysnki after a questionable fifth foul call allowed the Lancers' Sam Arnold to lead her team to a 52-48 Upstate Eight Conference girls basketball win at Bartlett Friday night.
Trailing the whole first half except for a 2-0 start, the Lancers (8-1, 2-0) had to play comeback in the second half.
"I did expect a very tight game," said Lake Park coach Chris Fruehling. "Bartlett's a very quick, athletic team. I expected this game to come down to the final quarter."
After the Hawks (5-4, 0-2) took their final lead of the game, Arnold went on to score 10 of Lake Park's final 16 points going 6 of 7 at the free throw line after a 1 of 5 performance before then. Arnold led all scorers with 19 points, and Devin Johnston added 12 for the Lancers.
"I definitely felt like I had to step up late in the game," Arnold said. "I did not do as well as I would have liked at the line, but I did start hitting them near the end."
While Gulczynski did not have a great night offensively with only 4 points, she stepped up big helping the Hawks hold Arnold to only 2 first-half points and keeping the Lancers scoreless through the first five and a half minutes of the second quarter.
Coupled with Ashley Santos tallying 9 first half points, finishing the game leading the Hawks with 17, Bartlett was able to hold the lead most of the game. Kristin Conniff added a 7 of 8 second half performance at the line and finished the game with 12 points. Santos also had 8 rebounds.
Ashley with 17 points had a nice game and Kristin did a really nice job tonight attacking the basket," said Bartlett coach Denise Sarna. "I think Jacki did a phenomenal job defensively. That was the game though, when we lost Jacki."
