Briefs: U.S. Bank donates to college
North Central College has received a $10,000 donation from U.S. Bank for the school's Wentz Concert Hall and Fine Arts Center. The $30 million state-of-the-art facility officially was dedicated and opened to the community on Oct. 18. The 57,000-square-foot building features a 605-seat concert hall, 150-seat black box performance space, an art gallery, rehearsal space and classrooms.
District 33 enrollment
West Chicago Elementary District 33 officials are sponsoring a series of meetings this week to explain how the district will handle enrollment growth. The remaining meetings are planned for 7 p.m. tonight, Nov. 11, at Wegner School, 180 Marcella Lane; 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at Currier School, 800 Gary's Mill Road; 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Indian Knoll, 0N645 Indian Knoll Road; 9:30 a.m. Nov. 14 at the District 33 board room, 312 E. Adolescence discussion
Glenbard High School District 87 is sponsoring "The Time of Normal Insanity" with psychologist and author Michael Maniacci at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, to talk about adolescence. An additional parent discussion at 6:30 p.m. will talk about how to communicate with kids so they listen, how to let go, independence and how to distinguish between normal and insane behavior. Bloomingdale author wins
John Flaherty of Bloomingdale has been chosen as third-place winner of the James Jones Short Story Award in the Third Annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition for his short story, "BUMS." On Nov. 21, Flaherty will read his story during the formal awards ceremony at Bradley University in Peoria. He also will receive a cash prize and plaque signed by Secretary of State Jesse White and Karen Danczak Lyons, president of the Illinois Center for Books. Flaherty has lived in Bloomingdale for six years and is a member of The Writer's Workshop of Bloomingdale.
