Briefs: Gifts for service personnel
Aurora again will send gifts to city residents in active military service who are stationed in the United States or overseas. Service personnel will receive a one-pound box of mixed nuts and a card in time for the holidays. The mixed nuts are provided by the Kiwanis Club of Aurora. Names and mailing address of Aurora citizens in active service may be phoned to the Mayor's Office of Special Events at (630) 844-4731 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The deadline for submitting names is Nov. 18.
Buses involved in minor accident
Two school buses heading in the same direction clipped each other early Tuesday morning in Glen Ellyn, police officials said. Glen Ellyn Deputy Police Chief Bill Holmer said the first bus - full of students from Glenbard West High School - was stopped at a stop light on Main Street at Geneva Road, when a second empty bus heading in the same direction was merging into the left hand turning lane at the intersection. Holmer said the mirrors on the two buses clipped each other, causing minor damages to both vehicles. He added no students or bus drivers were injured in the minor bender. The buses, owned by First Student bus company, were pulled off to the side of the road while a third bus was brought in to bring students to the high school.
Lombard garage fire
A fire caused $70,000 in damages to a residential garage and two cars inside of it on the 900 block of south Lombard Avenue in Lombard around 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13. Lombard fire officials no one was injured in the blaze and its cause is still under investigation. According to a report from the department, the blaze fire under control within minutes after a neighbor called 911 to report smoke and flames. Firefighters from the York Center Fire Protection District and Villa Park Fire Department also helped extinguish the fire, drawing a total of 34 rescue workers to the scene.
Itasca Holiday Inn open house
The Holiday Inn in Itasca will be renovating, and officials are hosting an open house 4 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday to preview the new improvement plans. Work includes renovations to the rooms, banquet and meeting facilities, pool, lobby and other guest areas. The renovation is scheduled to be completed by next summer. FEMA center hours change
The FEMA disaster recovery center at DuPage County's Jack T. Knuepfer Administration Building is cutting its Sunday hours. The center was set up to help victims of the September floods learn about resources available from the federal government to fix and replace damaged property. Other sites have opened in the region, and Sunday operations have been slow since the center was opened nearly two weeks ago, officials said. The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is located in the cafeteria at 421 N. County Farm Road.
Hispanic Heritage recruiting
Aurora's Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board is seeking new members. The board is a non-partisan advisory board that is community based and funded by the city. It acts as a bridge between the Hispanic community and all other communities in the city. The board meets at 9 a.m. on the second Monday of the month at city hall, 44 E. Downer Place. Those interested in applying to become members of this board may call Liz DeLeon, Events Coordinator, at (630) 844-4731 no later than Friday, Dec. 12. Members are appointed by the mayor.
Glenbard book drive
Glenbard High School District 87's Advocating Character Through Service Committee is presenting a book drive, Glenbard Gives Books, at all four Glenbard high schools through Oct. 22.
