Briefs: Police called to school

Naperville police were called to Fry Elementary School Friday morning for a report of domestic battery. Two adults had an altercation outside the school at 8:41 a.m. over parental supervision, according to Cmdr. Dave Hoffman. He said an arrest was made but he had no further details. Students used alternate doors to enter the building while the situation was occurring and neither students nor staff was in danger, according to an e-mail Principal Moira Arzich sent to Fry families.

District 2 board opening

Candidates are needed to fill a vacancy on the Bensenville Elementary District 2 school board created by board member Beth Mattson's resignation. Candidates can obtain an application and questionnaire by calling (630) 766-5940 or visiting the district's administration center, 210 S. Church Road. The board tentatively plans to consider candidates at an Oct. 1 meeting. The new board member, under the tentative plan, would be seated Oct. 15.

Carol Stream dance

Residents can dance from 7 p.m. today to 7 a.m. Sunday at Brunswick Zone, 170 W. North Ave., Carol Stream, to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The fundraiser, which includes raffles, door prizes and a silent auction, will help raise money for the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. The cost is $35 per person. Meet Villa Park officials

Villa Park will hold an evening coffee with the board at 7 p.m. Wednesday at village hall, 20 S. Ardmore Ave. The gathering will follow the same open and informal format of the Saturday morning coffees.

Free English classes

Adults who want to learn how to speak English can take free classes from 7 to 9:15 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday evenings at West Chicago Community High School District 94, 326 Joliet St., Entrance H, in West Chicago. All instruction and materials are free. Register at the high school from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. In addition to the English classes, the district also offers Spanish GED and citizenship preparation classes. For details, call (630) 876-6580.

Class for new home buyers

The DuPage Homeownership Center, a nonprofit housing counseling agency, will offer free classes for first-time home buyers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St., Naperville; on Sept. 27 at Outreach Community Center, 345 S. President St., Carol Stream; and Oct. 4 at Addison Village Hall, 1 Friendship Plaza, Addison. An additional class for Spanish-speaking individuals will be Sept. 6 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 515 S. Wheaton Ave., Wheaton. The class is free, but reservations are required and can be made by calling (630) 260-2500.
