35 years of working for area seniors
Seniors dining at the congregate meal site in McHenry will celebrate the anniversary of the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging on June 18.
The agency recently began its 35th year of service to seniors, and is observing the milestone with a series of parties at congregate sites in each of the eight counties it serves. Members of the agency's staff and board of directors will attend and participate in the celebration with games and festivities.
The Salvation Army Golden Diners Program provides a midday meal for seniors Monday through Friday at the McHenry Senior Center, 3519 N. Route 31.
Seniors who plan to attend the anniversary luncheon or on any other day at this site should make a reservation 24 hours in advance by calling (815) 385-8260.
Last year the weekday senior nutrition program in McHenry County served a total of 9,693 congregate meals to 366 participants and delivered 51,129 meals to 536 seniors at their homes. The Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging is the primary funder of the program, using a combination of state and federal funds provided under the Older Americans Act, but the program also uses funds from local sources and contributions by participants.
The Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging was chartered in 1974 as a nonprofit agency, and is one of 13 Area Agencies on Aging in Illinois and 655 in the United States. The agency coordinates and supports a network of many services for seniors and caregivers throughout DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties, and is an advocate for seniors and their needs. In addition to congregate and home-delivered meals, the services also include information and assistance, outreach, case management, legal services, transportation, counseling, long-term care Ombudsman, caregiver support, and several other services.
