Wrap: St. Edward, Hampshire win openers

The top-seeded St. Edward softball team rolled to a 16-0 five-inning win over Luther North Tuesday in the Class 2A Driscoll regional behind a three-pitcher no-hitter.

Erin McGraw (7-6), Sarah Field and Meghan Petersen combined on the no-hitter for St. Edward, which also pounded out 18 hits.

Lea Diaz (3B, 2 RBI), Kristi Knott (2B) and McGraw (2 RBI) each had 3 hits for St. Edward (15-11) while Kelly Knott (RBI) and Megan Tourtellott (RBI) each had 2 hits. Senior Megan Pozezinski continued her hot streak with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, while Madeline Foehringer and Stephanie Werner each had RBI as well.

St. Edward will play for the regional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday against the winner of today's game between Driscoll and Willows Academy.

Hampshire 19, St. Benedict 0: With a 13-run first inning, Hampshire (17-13) earned a bid to the Class 2A Walther Lutheran regional final, which will be played at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The second-seeded Whips will face the winner of today's game between No. 3 seed Walther Lutheran and No. 5 Chicago Latin.

"Everybody hit the ball well, and everybody hit," said coach Ken Bram of Tuesday's win. "It was a great all-around effort."

Ally Kent had 3 doubles, while Jordan Moore (3b), Tina Tuminaro (2b) and Jessica Kraus (2b) added extra base knocks. Kent was also untouchable in the circle striking out all nine batters she faced in 3 innings of work.

Jacobs 12, Dundee-Crown 2: Lauren Arceneaux (2-for-3), Marissa Lombardo (3-for-4), Lizzie Andrews (HR) and Sarah Jacobson (2-for-4, 2 doubles) combined for 8 of Jacobs' 14 hits to lead the Golden Eagles (25-3, 13-0) in this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win.

Lombardo improved to 4-0 on the season allowing no earned runs on 7 hits while fanning four in 6 innings of work for the win.

Kayla Schumacher took the loss, while Jenn Tinsley led D-C plate efforts going 2-for-3.

Prairie Ridge 3, Grant 0: Behind a 1-hit effort inside the circle from Johanna Turner (9-5), Prairie Ridge (17-10) recorded this nonconference win over Grant. Turner tallied 10 strikeouts en route to the 1-hitter.

At the plate, Caitlin Pollock (2-for-3, 2b, RBI), Kari Rankin (2-for-4, 2b) and Lauren Seegers (2-for-4) led the way.

South Elgin 1, Streamwood 0: Neck-and-neck throughout, South Elgin (18-9, 9-8) came away with this Upstate Eight Conference win in a game called after 5 innings due to weather. Lauren Vitiello went 2-for-2 knocking in the lone run of the game, while Cary Thereon was inside the circle for the win. Thereon allowed no runs on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts. Caitlin Stredde had a double and was the lone player to cross the plate.

For Streamwood (8-20, 6-11), Barb Posinger (7-16) endured the loss matching Thereon's numbers with 4 hits and 2 strikeouts. Melissa Abraham led the offense with 2 hits.

Huntley 10, Richmond-Burton 2: Recording runs in all but the sixth inning, Huntley (19-8, 11-2) earned this nonconference win. Jenna Mychko (3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Alex Albanese (3-for-5, 3 runs) and Deana DeBosschere (2-for-4, 3 RBI) led the Red Raider hitting. In the circle, Kacy Kane improved to 3-0 allowing one run on 3 hits while striking out three in 4 innings pitched.

Marengo 3, CL South 1: In a close contest, Crystal Lake South dropped this nonconference game. Jessica Gable (6 IP, 3 runs, 8 hits, 6 strikeouts) endured the loss. Vicky Pyan knocked in the only Gator run of the game.

Cary-Grove 10, Woodstock 1: Behind a solid effort inside the circle from Julie Clemment (7 IP, 5 hits, 10 strikeouts), Cary-Grove (15-13, 7-6) earned this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win. Pounding out 10 hits, Maggie O'Brien (2-for-3, 2 triples, 3 runs, RBI), Alexis Haley (3b, 2 RBI), Kelly Smith (2-for-4, 2b, run) and Amy Palminteri (2-for-4, 2 runs) led the Trojan offense.

Waubonsie Valley 3, Larkin 2: Victoria Nino (2b, RBI), Sophie Sterricker (2b) and Rebecca Premak (hit) led the Larkin offense in this Upstate Eight loss. Meg Johnson was on the mound for the Royals (4-21, 4-12) recording 1 strikeout.

Bartlett 11, Elgin 0: Behind 12 hits, Bartlett (25-5, 19-0) nabbed this Upstate Eight Conference win while clinching the conference title outright with a perfect UEC record to date. At the plate, Elizabeth Kay (2b, HR) and Callie Dennison (2 doubles) led the way for the Hawks. Dennison (9-1) also earned the win striking out three and walking one.

Kelly Patchett endured the loss allowing 7 hits while fanning two in 3½ innings of work for Elgin (3-18, 3-11).
