Records shattered at county meet
Records are meant to be broken and they were shattered at the McHenry County Meet held at Crystal Lake Central High School Thursday night.
In the girls meet, Crystal Lake South senior Kellie Schuh had a night to remember.
Schuh who had never broken 37 feet in the triple jump, leaped 37-3 on her third jump of the finals to set the record. The old record was held by Jenny Schwichow of Woodstock, who Jumped 36-9 in 1998.
"I was just wanted to get over the 37 foot barrier," said Schuh. "I just concentrated on going further on that last jump."
Schuh wasn't done yet. She battled Jacobs standout Sarah Ross in the pole vault. Schuh set a school record with a vault of 10-6 to finish second. Ross cleared the bar at 11-0 to win the event.
"I went straight from the triple jump to the pole vault and I was really fatigued during my first few vaults," said Schuh. I was able to drink something and relax. I gripped the pole 4 inches up and vaulted better. I am really excited about my night."
Ross, whose vault of 11 feet, broke the record previously held by Julie Rendino of McHenry. Rendino vaulted 10-6 during the 2004 meet. Ross missed on her 3 attempts at 11-6.
"I just have to work out some kinks and I can make it at 11-6," said Ross. I am right there. I just have to work on some little things in practice."
The only other area winner was Crystal Lake South's Aimee Schuh, who claimed the long jump in a leap of 16-9.
Richmond-Burton leads the team standings after 6 events with 29 points. Crystal Lake South is a point behind with 28 and Prairie Ridge is third with a score of 21. Jacobs and McHenry are tied for fourth with 18 points followed by Marian Central (17), Huntley (16), Cary-Grove (15), Woodstock (13), Harvard (7) and Crystal Lake Central (4).
Boys meet: It's almost scary how far Jacobs senior Brad Foote might throw the discus by the end of the season.
Foote set the county record in winning the discus in a throw of 164-6. The record was held by former Jacobs standout Pat Whalen, who launched the discus 164-1 in the 2004 meet.
"I feel great that I won the event and set the meet record, But I know I an do better," said Foote. I expect to be over 170 by the end of he season. I just need to drill myself in practice and build some consistency."
It was also a good night for Foote's teammate Darius Bowers. Bowers jumped 2-5 ½ to win the long jump and set a meet record. Bowers broke the record f Cary-Grove's Rashad McDade, who jumped 22-3 ½ in 1997.
Mike Van Dorpe of Crystal Lake South won the triple jump with a jump of 43-8 ½ and rairie Ridge's David Carbajal won the shot put with a throw of 54-1 ¾.
Led by Bowers and Foote, Jacobs leads after 6 events with a score of 42. McHenry is second with 32 ½ followed by Prairie Ridge (24), Crystal Lake Central (21), Crystal Lake South (18), Huntley (16), Woodstock 9 ½, Marengo 8, Cary-Grove 6, Johnsburg 5, Richmond Burton 2 and Harvard 2. Marian Central and Alden Hebron have yet to score.
