Wrap: Error-free Carmel topples Wauconda
Carmel played error-free baseball and it made a difference in an otherwise close nonconference game as the Corsairs beat Wauconda 6-5.
The Corsairs got 2 hits apiece from David Venegoni and Joe Pudlo while Jordan Sivertsen got the win on the mound with 8 strikeouts and only 2 walks.
In relief, Mike Bergstrom pitched two innings and got the save.
For Wauconda, Matt Machon and Eric Johnson each had 2 hits. Machon had 2 doubles.
Mundelein 4, Prairie Ridge 1: Mundelein upped its record to 6-1 with the nonconference victory.
Pitcher Eric Rohe rolled up 8 strikouts while teammates Jack Walliser, Dillon Smith and Jay Mueller all had doubles.
Libertyville 11, Hoffman Estates 3: Thanks to 11 hits on the day and an explosive sixth inning that yielded 5 runs, Libertyville rolled to the nonconference victory.
Joey Aiello had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run.
Mike Seefeldt added a double.
On the mound, Jeff Jenkins rolled up 6 strikeouts and gave up just 2 walks for the Wildcats, who move to 6-1.
Stevenson 13, Prospect 8: Thanks to a perfect day from Dan Morales, Stevenson rolled to a nonconference victory.
Morales went 4-for-4, including a triple. He also scored 4 runs and rolled up 5 RBI. To top it off, he registered 3 stolen bases.
David Savitt, Matt Goll and Kyle Ruchim all had doubles for Stevenson.
Grayslake C. 7, Round Lake 4: Sophomore pitcher Mitch Tielke fanned 6 batters in four innings to earn his first varsity win.
Steve Gawinski closed out the final three innings to get his second save of the season.
It was the Rams' sixth win in a row.
Offensively, Grayslake Central racked up 11 hits, led by Nick Tielke. He had 3 hits and 2 RBI.
Sean Seiler belted a solo home run for the Rams while teammates Matt Schmidt, Shawn Tobie and Kurt Schmidt all doubled. In fact, Matt Schmidt had 2 doubles.
"This was a battle for the entire game," Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. "It is always a close game when we play Round Lake. I'm happy for Mitch earning his first varsity win. He has worked extremely hard and Steve held them in check the rest of the way."
Grayslake N. 13, Zion-Benton 3: The Knights pounded out 11 hits on their way to the nonconference victory.
Jordan Field, Clay Henricksen and Jimmy Butler each had 2 hits. Butler drove in a team-high 3 runs.
Field got it done on the mound, too. He registered 7 strikeouts and gave up just 1 hit in four innings.
Grayslake North, which moves to 1-1 overall, scored 6 runs in the fourth inning alone.
Buffalo Grove 10, Warren 3: Buffalo Grove scored 6 runs in the bottom of the seventh to break open its slim 4-3 advantage.
The Blue Devils got doubles from Vince Viverito, Pat Walters and Ryan Pyles, who also drove in a run.
Crystal Lake South 15, Lakes 7: Crystal Lake South was up 11-1 before Lakes staged a bit of a rally.
The Eagles scored 6 runs on 3 hits in the fourth inning, but still couldn't get over the hump.
Softball
Stevenson 7, Grant 1: Stevenson broke up a scoreless game by scoring 5 runs in the fourth inning.
Amazingly, all 5 runs came with 2 outs. The Patriots then strung together 6 hits.
Pitcher Allison Micucci helped her cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. On the mound, she rolled up 8 strikeouts in 5 innings. She gave up just 1 hit and 1 walk.
Rebekah Ozga also had 2 hits for the Patriots. She drove in 2 runs as well.
Every Stevenson starter had at least 1 hit on the day.
Libertyville 5, Wauconda 4: It took some extra work, but Libertyville finally got the job done.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Katy Pfund drove in the winning run. She scored Amanda Pecucci, who was pinch running for Danielle Kaczmar.
Pfund had 2 hits on the day, as did Kat Bernard and Mackenzie Haws. Leading the way for the Wildcats were Toni Kintzel and Ali Haws, each of whom had 3 hits.
Freshman pitcher Danielle Kaczmar pitched the final four innings and got the win by giving up only 2 hits.
For Wauconda, Katie Born and Cara Nance each had 3 hits.
Lakes 6, Lake Forest 4: Five Lake Forest errors proved costly as Lakes got the nonconference victory despite finishing with just 1 hit.
Maddie Riordan got the only hit for the Eagles.
Woodstock 2, Grayslake N. 1: Despite 13 strikeouts from pitcher Carly Borders, Grayslake North couldn't pull out the victory.
Woodstock scored the game-winning run the in the bottom of the seventh.
Sam Meyers went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Knights.
Soccer
Wauconda 4, Zion-Benton 0: It was 4 goals and four different scorers for Wauconda.
Jacklyn Schumann, Jess Hellweg, Hanah Voyta and Tammy Ellis all scored.
Goalkeeper Anna Lowe got the shutout for the Bulldogs, who move to 3-0-2 on the season.
Volleyball
Vernon Hills d. Mundelein: Vernon Hills has long modeled its defense after the relentless brand of defense played by Mundelein.
So it was with particular satisfaction that the Cougars gave Mundelein a dose of its own medicine by playing some real tough defense.
Vernon Hills swept the Mustangs 25-18, 25-14 to move to 8-2 overall.
Jeff Achler led he way with 18 digs while Keegan Harris had 14 kills and 2 blocks.
Setter Ethan Steinhaus had 22 assists.
For Mundelein, which falls to 3-5, John McElligott had 5 kills while Nick Faghihi had 4. Setter Tim Tokarz had 12 assists.
Stevenson d. Hersey: Stevenson outlasted Hersey in three games(25-15, 14-25, 25-19) to get the nonconference victory.
Brandon Palmer led the 4-4 Patriots with 9 kills and 3 blocks. Teammate Jay Meisner had 8 digs and 2 aces while setter Jason Giecek had 23 assists.
Warren d. Niles North: The Blue Devils got a 25-8, 25-19 nonconference sweep.
Ryan Schuette had 8 kills while Jarrett Jespersen had 16 digs.
Tennis
Libertyville d. Grayslake C.: The Wildcats not only swept the meet to get a 7-0 victory, they also swept every match.
None of the seven matches went beyond two sets.
Leading the way for Libertyville was No. 1 singles player Erik Scaulan, who got a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Mitch Granger.
In No. 1 doubles action, Libertyville duo Dean Leventis and Tyler Chaitoff defeated Tim Schultz and Pat Edmonds, 6-1, 6-2.
Vernon Hills d. Mundelein: Singles play didn't go quite as planned for Vernon Hills, but doubles action was triple the fun.
All three doubles teams won to help the Cougars edge Mundelein, 3-2.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Sam Rong and Riaz Hoveydai of Vernon Hills defeated Chris Deri and Masoom Patel of Mundelein in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Mundelein won both singles matches, led by Tyler Patner's 6-3, 6-0 victory over Josh Brickman of Vernon Hills.
Jacobs d. Grayslake N.: Led by victories in all four doubles matches, Jacobs rolled past Grayslake North, 5-2.
The Knights managed to win two of the three singles matches.
In the No. 2 singles match, Peter Kopacz defeated Collin Forbes, 7-6, 6-1.
Lakes d. IMSA: Lakes got out the brooms for a 5-0 sweep.
Leading the way was No. 1 singles player Andrew Yopp, who got a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Joe Ou.
Yopp tortured Ou with a steady diet of groundstrokes to the backhand side.
Meanwhile, thanks to aggressive net play, the No. 1 doubles team of Charlie Scuphan and Justin Shea got a 6-0, 6-1 sweep.
Badminton
Stevenson d. Fremd: Stevenson won four of five doubles matches to get an 8-7 victory over Fremd.
Sam Wei and Kerry Sullivan led the way with a sweep in the No. 1 doubles match.
Water Polo
Libertyville 9, New Trier 6: Libertyville ran out to a 4-1 lead after one quarter, but had to make a late rally to get the victory.
New Trier tied the game at 6-6 in the third quarter, but then Libertyville scored three more times in the fourth to put away the game.
Wheeling 6, Vernon Hills 3: Despite 5 steals from Melanie Lecavoz, the Cougars fell short.
College Softball
CLC sweeps Oakton: CLC moved to 13-3 overall with two wins over Oakton, 11-2, 3-1.
In both games, Alyssa Wilson went 3-for-4. On the day she finished with 2 home runs, a triple and 2 doubles. She also had a total of 7 RBI.
