Meyers, Breitweiser pitch Knights to sweep

It wasn't spring cleaning, but the Grayslake North softball team did some sweeping on Saturday.

The Knights swept Highland Park in a doubleheader, 10-0 and 4-2.

Grayslake North moves to 4-1 on the season.

In the first game, sophomore pitcher Sam Meyers got the shutout victory. She allowed just 2 hits. Meanwhile, teammates Carly Borders and Amanda Leon each went 2-for-3.

Borders also homered.

In the second game, Grayslake North pitcher Jaimie Breitweiser rolled up 10 strikeouts.

The sixth inning made the difference for the Knights. They scored 3 runs to break up a 1-1 tie.

Leon had a triple and Hillary Kuhl had a double in the inning.

Stevenson sweeps Hersey: Sophomore Amanda Jaegers jacked a 3-run home run to cap a 5-run seventh inning, as the Patriots defeated the host Huskies 5-0 in Game 1 of a nonconference doubleheader.

Stevenson won 3-1 in Game 2 to improve to 3-4.

Allie Micucci pitched a 3-hit shutout in the opener, striking out three.

In the Patriots' seventh, Rebekah Ozga (2-for-3) and Claire Kirchner (2-for-3) were on base with singles when Traci Africk hit a two-out RBI double. After a run-scoring base hit by Courtney Belcastro (2-for-4), Jaegers hit a ball over the fence for Stevenson's first homer of the season.

In Game 2, Jordan Willis pitched 5½ innings for the win, and Micucci finished up in the circle for the save.

Tovah Schwartz (double), Ozga and Kirchner were all 2-for-4.

Lake Zurich 9, Grant 0: Chrissie Wichmann and Katie Buczynski were relentless in the circle for Lake Zurich.

They combined to allow just 1 Grant hit.

Wichmann had a no-hitter through four innings. She gave up just 1 walk and struck out six.

Buczynski entered in relief in the fifth inning and closed out the game with 6 strikeouts, no walks and 1 hit allowed.

Lake Zurich, which rolled up 11 hits, got 3 doubles from Buczynski and 2 doubles from Coryn Schmit.

Antioch sweeps Grayslake Central: The Sequoits racked up the runs in their doubleheader sweep of Grayslake Central, winning 17-5 and 12-2.

In the first game, Melisa Ori drilled a grand slam for the Sequoits, who also got a home run from Ann Bruce.

In the second game, Antioch got two more homers -- both by Allie Anttila.

Grayslake Central got a home run from Alison Johnson and a double from Abbie Goetsch.

Vernon Hills splits with BG: Vernon Hills got off to a good start, but couldn't finish that way in splitting a doubleheader with Buffalo Grove.

In the first game, Charlotte Hoffmann helped Vernon Hills to an 8-3 victory by going 3-for-4 and smacking a home run. She drove in 3 runs.

Marci Pasquesi and Anna Christensen each went 2-for-4 for the Cougars.

Meanwhile, Jackie Allen struck out four batters in a complete game.

In a 3-0 loss to Buffalo Grove in the second game, Vernon Hills mustered just 1 hit, a single by Adriana Longobardi.

Vernon Hills is now 6-3 on the season.

Wauconda splits with McHenry: Wauconda got a 4-2 win in the opener of its doubleheader with McHenry but then lost 13-1 in the finale.

Amanda Pausa led the Wauconda offense with a double in the first game. The Bulldogs also got a solid performance out of pitcher Kayla Stos, who finished with 6 strikeouts.

In the second game, Wauconda made 5 errors while McHenry was error-free.

Lakes gets a win in quad: Lakes went 1-2 in the Prairie Ridge Quad at Lippold Park in Crystal Lake.

The Eagles (2-3) got a 4-2 victory over Elgin but fell to Cary-Grove 4-2 and Prairie Ridge 9-4.

In the victory, Lakes got 2 hits from Shannon Cooley, while Hannah Karstedt had a hit and 2 walks.

Against Cary-Grove, freshman Nicole Speck went 2-for-3. Against Prairie Ridge, 6 Lakes errors overshadowed a solo home run by Karstedt.
