Fox Valley Wrap: D-C 37, Woodstock 35
Marcus Henry scored only one basket all night, but it came at an extremely opportune time for Dundee-Crown -- with .4 seconds left in the game, to be precise.
And Henry's rebound basket provided the winning margin as the Chargers downed Woodstock 37-35 in Fox Valley Conference boys basketball action at James Shipley Memorial Gymnasium.
With time running down in a tie game, the Chargers' Jeff Beck got a good look at the basket, but his shot missed. Henry snuck in behind the defense for the rebound and laid it in just before the buzzer.
"We thought they were going to play man-to-man and we had (Henry) as a screener," said Chargers coach Lance Huber. "He just slipped behind some people and picked it off and somehow made it. I don't know how, but he did and I'm just glad to be going home."
Before Henry's bucket Dundee-Crown had mostly been the Jeff Beck group, as the junior guard clicked for 18 points and 7 rebounds. David Bernard added 10 points and 9 rebounds as the teams ground it out for most of the 32 minutes.
The first three quarters, in particular, resembled a mud-wrestling tournament more than a basketball game. The teams were tied 21-21 after 3 periods.
Woodstock jumped out to an 8-0 lead through four minutes. The Blue Streaks didn't score another field goal until less than a minute remained in the half. By then the Chargers led 15-11.
"I was hoping we could keep it in the 40s," said Huber. "I've been watching their scores and they've been getting a lot in the 60s.
Obviously, down 8-0, it didn't look good."
In the first half, Dundee-Crown shot 33 percent from the field, missed its only free throw, and had 8 turnovers to 7 field goals, yet they led by 4. Woodstock shot just 18 pecent and turned the ball over 9 times.
Dean Griffith and Derek Brown scored 9 points apiece to lead Woodstock. Greg McNally added 5 points for D-C.
