Crystal Lake South edges Bartlett
In nonconference girls basketball action Saturday, Crystal Lake South (15-7) edged Bartlett 45-44.
The Gators outscored the Hawks 15-12 in the fourth quarter.
Carly Juliano led the Gators with 10 points. Molly Benoit also contributed 9 points to the victory.
Teammates Laura Bicknell and Katie Burton also added 7 points each.
Bartlett's Jacki Gulczyski led all scorers with 17 points for Bartlett (7-15).
Rockford Guilford 53, Elgin 36: In nonconference action the Maroons (0-21) remained winless. Brandi Hernandez led Elgin with 10 points. Caris Alan and Kayla Jackson added 6 points apiece.
Luther South 42, Westminster 40: The Warriors (0-14, 0-7) fell just shy of earning their first victory of the season against Luther South in Private School League action in Elgin. Scoring more than half of the Warriors' points, Rachel Doby shot 6 of 10 from the line and finished with 22 points. Beth Kautz also collected 6 points while teammate Sarah Rodgers added 5.
Hoffman Estates 50, Huntley 49: The Red Raiders (12-9) dropped a nip-and-tuck nonconference battle. Megan Martinez led Huntley with a team high 13 points. Allyson Stellmach also posted 12 points and Daisy Jara added 10.
Cary-Grove 56, Grayslake Central 35: With double-digit scoring from Jill Cole (10 points), Liz Bart (10 points) and Danielle Smith (13 points), the latter of whom led all scorers, Cary-Grove (18-3) gained the win in this Fox Valley crossover contest.
Elk Grove 68, Prairie Ridge 59: The Wolves (9-13) fell to Elk Grove in nonconference action. Shannon Hennelly posted a team high 22 points for the Wolves in a losing cause. Emily Murphy (14 points) and Julie Schwartz (13 points) each contributed great efforts but Prairie Ridge couldn't gain the lead.
Plainfield North 50, South Elgin 43: South Elgin (11-11) fell dropped this nonconference game in overtime in Plainfield. Courtney Kumerow led the Storm offense with 13 points. Genevieve Johnson (10 points) and Amanda Sieverding-Thomas (10 points) each added double-digit scoring for South Elgin.
Boys swimming
At Hersey: Warren won its first Hersey Invitational since 2003 at Olympic Pool in Arlington Heights as it outscored Deerfield 115-107.
Warren's Kirk Gagliardo set a meet record in the 100-yard fly (53.76), outlasting Jacobs/Dundee-Crown's Sean Kelly ( 57.50) and Hersey senior Tony Ponzo (58.36).
Defending invitational champion Conant finished third with 96 points, ahead of Jacobs/Dundee-Crown (81), Hersey (50) and St. Viator (7).
Jacobs/Dundee-Crown's Nick Pankau won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.24.
Gymnastics
Elgin/Larkin coop at Niles West: The Elgin/Larkin gymnastics co-op found itself challenged at Niles West, where 24 teams vied for the top spots. Amanda Vercelli demonstrated her her talent by placing 23rd on both the uneven bars (7.75) and vault (8.05) against a deep field. Vercelli also placed 27th on the balance beam with a score of 7.6. The team improved this season at 60.675 from last year's score of 50.75 at the Niles West Invite.
Wrestling
Cary-Grove Triangular: The Trojans defeated Fremd 51-20. Alec Hargrove (119) defeated Fremd's Megelo for a 3-0 victory. Matt Springer (125), Ray White (145), Ryan Psenka (171), Paul Rands (215), and Asim Menzil (285) all won by forfeit.
Cary-Grove also faced Libertyville where the Trojans fell 51-9. Paul Rands was the only Trojan to defeat his opponent at the heavy weight level 8-1.
Dundee-Crown Quad: The Dundee-Crown wrestling team competed against Jefferson where the Chargers came out victorious with a score of 73-6. Frank Abitua (103) won by pinning his opponent at 3:50. Jeremy Lee (112) and Jermaine Lee (119) each won by forfeit. Jack Lewis won by pinning Jefferson's Green at 2:43. Jeremy Hanley (152), Mike Lukowski (189), Billy Cook (285), Tom Newman (215) all won by pin.
Dundee-Crown head coach Al Zinke gained his 500th victory as the Chargers defeated Harlem with a score of 51-17. Jeremy Lee (112) won by forfeit. Cody Muscat (130) pinned Bolin of Harlem at 3:13. Jack Lewis won his 135-pound match 5-0 for another victory for the Chargers.
Boys swimming
Bartlett/Streamwood coop 10th at Lockport: Competing among 12 teams at the Lockport Steve Allen Invitational, the Bartlett/Streamwood co-op took 10th-place by finishing the meet with 68 points.
Mike Brady led the co-op, earning second-place honors in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.17. He placed third in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:47.97.
Invitational host Lockport won the meet with 397 points. The Wheaton co-op finished second with 366 points, and Hinsdale South (303) took third place.
Women's basketball
Kankakee 77, ECC 40: Unable to kick-start the offense, Elgin Community College dropped this contest to Kankakee. Ariana Topps had a productive game, delivering 19 points for the Spartans. Karina Herrera and De'Larissa Morris each added 7 points.
Trinity International 68, Judson 61: Despite building an 8-point lead in the first half, Judson (6-12, 1-2) fell against TIU in CCAC action.
Kirstin Johns led the Eagles with 16 points. Teammate Alicia Rovertoni also picked up her fifth double-double of the year with 13 points. Kelly Friestad added 11 points but the Eagles, who pulled within 5 points with 1:51 left in the game, couldn't regain the lead.
