The Chapel: According to the 2003 Illinois Poverty Summit, "Northeastern Illinois has the greatest number of people in poverty, but also has the state's greatest wealth." People from The Chapel have embraced this need by launching a church-wide campaign toward ending hunger in the Chicago area. The Chapel will be handing out 2,000 boxes of rice, one pound for each family in their congregation, asking them to eat only the box of rice for dinner one night. No sides, no meat, no dessert, with only water to drink.

Daily e-mails and text messages will also be sent out as reminders of the real problem of hunger in our area. The Chapel is also organizing a mobile food pantry, gathering donations for local food pantries, and assembling holiday meal baskets for those in need.

Church of the Holy Apostles (Episcopal church): The church in Wauconda will hold its Annual Auction Dinner and Dance Friday at Mill Creek Banquets on Mill Street. It will feature appetizers, a seven-course dinner, silent and live auctions, and dancing until midnight. Community Protestant Church, United Church of Christ: The church at 418 N. • The church will host The Joint Youth Ministries on Sunday evenings this year.

Congregation Or Shalom: Sisterhood is sponsoring a Holiday Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at Hawthorn Middle School North, 201 Hawthorn Parkway, Vernon Hills. The bazaar will feature such items as handmade crafts, jewelry, clothing and giftware as well as representatives from many well-known businesses including Tupperware and Pampered Chef. Raffles will be held for a chance to win items donated by each vendor. Admission is free. Crosspoint Church: The church, formerly the Fox Lake Baptist Church, 27430 W. Nippersink Road, Ingleside, offers a contemporary worship service with a relevant message from the Bible at 10 a.m. Sundays.

Nursery is available as well as a Bible-based program for children ages kindergarten through sixth grade during the morning worship service.

Awana Ministries for children, ages kindergarten through sixth grade, meet on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

High school youth generally meet on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. Junior high students meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays.

A men's group meets on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. There are various ministries for women throughout the year.

First Church of Christ, Scientist: The church is at 240 Park Place in Libertyville, which is across from National City Bank. Sunday services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday School is held at the same hour for children and young people up to the age of 20.

Also, there is Wednesday midweek meetings at 7:30 p.m. Here attendants give gratitude for the help and blessings that their growing understanding of God has brought into their lives. All are welcome to attend services.

Grace Lutheran Church: Grace Lutheran Church offers two worship services each Sunday. A traditional worship service is offered at 8:30 a.m. A blended contemporary service is offered at 10 a.m. Children's ministries for age 4 to sixth grade will be offered during 10 a.m. worship., beginning Sunday. Children do not have to be members to attend Children's Ministries. Communion is served on the first and third Sunday of each month. The Lake County Exchange Club: The annual "One Nation Under God" Prayer Breakfast will be from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Nov. 20 at Gurnee Community Church, 4555 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee.

This annual community gathering focuses on giving thanks for the freedom as Americans to live as one nation under God. The featured guest speaker will be (Ret.) Commander Mark Jumper, USN. The program is sponsored by The Exchange Clubs of Lake and McHenry counties.

Currently serving as senior pastor of Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Libertyville, Jumper served as a chaplain for 24 years, retiring in 2006. A veteran of Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, he devised and implemented the Marine Corps Warrior Transition Program. Named as the first Coast Guard Chaplain of the Year in 1999, his final assignments included the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the Naval Chaplains School.

His topic, "The Practical Benefits of Being One Nation Under God," will look at the views of America's founders to find guidance for our national and personal life today.

Preceding Jumper's remarks will be a performance by the Grayslake High School Jazz Band.

The free event is open to the public. A free breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage, bagels, fruit, juice and coffee will be served.

Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit: Volunteers are needed to help staff shelters and provide meals as part of the Lake County Public Action to Deliver Shelter program. On the second Saturday of each month from October through April, Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit provides volunteers through the night to care for the homeless. • Join in a service of hymns, prayer and readings to give thanks for the blessings of family, harvest and nation worship at 10 a.m. Nov. 22 at the church.

North Shore Unitarian Church: Young musicians, songwriters and vocalists will showcase their talent at the First Annual Jumpstart Jazz concert, a benefit for Public Action to Deliver Shelter Crisis Services. The performances will take place at North Shore Unitarian Church beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 17. The suggested donation is $10 with all funds going to PADS.

Performers include vocalist Amanda Nach, a sophomore at Maine West High School; the Dan Pierson Trio, with Dan Pierson from Libertyville High School (piano), Amalie Smith from DePaul University (bass), and Peter Manheim from Evanston Township High School (drums); jazz quintet Missing Fundamental from Lake Zurich High School with Cary Foxx (tenor saxophone), Tomas Drury (alto saxophone), Nick Fletcher (piano), Colleen McGuckin (bass), and Hannah Ford (drums); the John Klaess 5 from Libertyville and New Trier High schools with Cory Richardson (guitar), John Klaess (trumpet), Ben Solomon (tenor saxophone), Lee Starovich (bass), and Ben Paulson (drums); and professional singer and songwriter Shelley Orbach.

A raffle featuring donated gift baskets will be held. Hot cider and homemade baked goods will be served to guests.

Saint Andrew's Lutheran Church: The church at 10 S. Lake St., Mundelein, will recognize and honor all who have served or are serving in the all branches of the armed forces at both services, 8:30 (traditional) and 10:45 (contemporary) a.m. on Sunday. St. Matthew Lutheran Church: St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School of Hawthorn Woods has created a mobile computer lab as part of its mission to improve technology at the school. A second computer lab will be utilized for keyboarding classes and lower grade computer activities.

In conjunction with the purchases of new hardware and software, the church and school will be redesigning its Web site, creating a wireless Internet environment throughout all the buildings, and setting up dedicated chat rooms for teachers.

• "Churning God: The Emerging World Questions," a talk by Dr. John Biersdorf, will be presented at 4 p.m. Nov. 25 at Byron Colby Barn, Prairie Crossing Community, 1561 Jones Point Road, Grayslake.

Biersdorf will explore the fundamental questions religion has raised in the human psyche through history; with particular attention to emerging questions and issues in American and world cultures.

Biersdorf is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. He has been an officer in the Marine Corps, a parish pastor in California and Michigan, director of the Department of Ministry at the National Council of Churches, and on the faculty of Union Theological Seminary in New York City and Yale Divinity School.

• The Men's Club of Congregation Beth Judea will hold its annual blood drive from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 25 in the Social Hall of the synagogue, which is located on Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. The blood drive is being held at this time due to the severe shortage of blood during the Thanksgiving holiday.

A photo ID is required when you fill out paperwork. Bring a state ID or driver's license and make sure to have something to eat before you arrive. Refreshments will be provided by Shalom Kosher Bakery and Life Source.

• The Beth Judea Youth Department will host a Shabbat Dinner and Service for the members of the various youth groups (Kadinkers, Kadima and USY) and their families Nov. 30. All congregants are cordially welcome to attend.

The dinner begins at 6 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. Shabbat service.

Cost of the dinner: adult (12 years and older) $18; 6 to 11 years old $10; 5 years old and younger $5. Vegetarian meals are available upon request.

• Beth Judea will host a Tailgate Shabbat Dinner Friday. Celebrate Shabbat by showing your Shabbat spirit and dressing in your favorite team's jersey. Dinner is at 6 p.m. and services are at 7:30 p.m. Cost: adults $18; children (2-5) $5; children (6-12) $10. Vegetarian meals are available upon request.

• The Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Judea will offer a Hanukkah Shoppe from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18 in the lobby. Before they enter the Shoppe, children will have filled out a form listing the people who are on their shopping list. Forms are available at the Beth Judea office. No gift is more than $9; gifts range in price from $1 to $9. To make this a really easy way for children to shop, the Sisterhood will even provide complimentary gift wrapping and gift stickers. No parents or any other adults will be allowed in the Shoppe, with the exception of some Sisterhood volunteers who will be there to help the children select their gifts.

• Beth Judea will host a Family Fun Night Nov. 17. There will be a Havdallah service, games (bring a favorite family board/card game), karaoke and snacks.

Donations to the Rachel Hirschman Fund are welcome. Rachel was a youth director at Beth Judea who was tragically killed in an automobile accident. The Rachel Hirschman Memorial Fund provides subsidies for USYers attending approved USY programs in Israel.

First Presbyterian Church of Waukegan: The church at 122 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Waukegan, will cap the year-long celebration of the church's sesquicentennial with a Founder's Day reunion Sunday. Members and guests will enjoy a reunion in the morning, followed by worship services that will include special music. Following the worship, a banquet will be held. The Knights of Columbus Waukegan Council 731: A special Memorial Mass will be held for all deceased members of the Knights of Columbus at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at Saint Dismas Church, 2600 Sunset Ave., Waukegan.
