Alpine Chapel: Members of the church will perform service (home repair, maintenance) projects for residents of Lake Zurich and surrounding communities today. The goal is to serve the community, as Jesus taught, by helping those who can't help themselves.
Alpine Chapel is a non-denominational community church. Alpine celebrates 25 years of ministry in Lake Zurich on the weekend of Oct. 12-14.

Congregation Beth Judea: The congregation will hold its Annual Simchat Torah Flag Procession and Taffy Apple Party at 7 p.m. Thursday in the synagogue's main sanctuary, directly after a 6:30 p.m. Minyan Prayer Service.
Those present will then be able to participate in the "Hakafot" (processions) with the Torah scrolls and join in the singing and dancing. And, of course, eating the Taffy Apples.
Traditional Simchat Torah Services will be held in the main sanctuary of the synagogue at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

• Shalom Memorial Park and Shalom Memorial Funeral Home sponsored an art contest, inviting students from area Jewish schools and day schools to submit original artwork depicting something associated with Jewish life, holidays, symbols, rituals or Israel.
The winners and finalists in this year's competition from Congregation Beth Judea are: Courtney Shub (first place), Sophia Podber, Kylie Rose Repsold, and Jacob Cohen.

• Rabbi Howard Lifshitz, senior rabbi of Congregation Beth Judea, will be the center of attention at Sisterhood's October meeting on at 8 p.m. Oct. 18. • A weekly class studying Jewish Law will meet from 8-9 a.m. Sunday mornings at Congregation Beth Judea, Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. Class meets from October through May.
The group, led by Rabbi Robert Gamer, will study the beginning of the Mishnah Torah. It is advised for participants to purchase a copy of Volume 1 of the Mishnah Torah in Hebrew/English. The edition that is recommended and will be used in class is by Moznaim Publishing Corp., translated by Rabbi Eliyahu Touger. • Shabbat worship services are offered at 7:30 p.m. Fridays (Kabbalat Shabbat) and at 9:30 a.m. Saturdays at Congregation Beth Judea, Route 83 and Hilltop Road, Long Grove. Congregation B'nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim: The congregation will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the location for its new temple and high school at Pine Street and Lake-Cook Road in Deerfield. At noon, the Chicagoland Jewish High School will be dedicating its new building with the highlight "walking" the Torah from Morton Grove to the new site (adjacent to the temple).
Crosspoint Church: The church, formerly the Fox Lake Baptist Church, 27430 W. Nippersink Road, Ingleside, offers a contemporary worship service with a relevant message from the Bible at 10 a.m. Sundays.
Nursery is available as well as a Bible-based program for children ages kindergarten through sixth grade during the morning worship service.
AWANA Ministries for children, ages kindergarten through sixth grade, meet on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Federated Church of Wauconda: The church at 200 S. Barrington Road (Route 176 and Barrington Road) is having its second annual Blessing of Animals service at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the parsonage back yard (across from the church parking lot). First Church of Christ, Scientist: The church is at 240 Park Place in Libertyville, which is across from National City Bank. Sunday services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday School is held at the same hour for children and young people up to the age of 20.

First Presbyterian Church of Libertyville: The church will begin the Alpha course at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Fellowship Hall, 219 W. Ivanhoe Congregational Church, United Church of Christ: A guest steward, the Rev. St. Andrew Episcopal Church: The church at 31 Park Ave., Grayslake, is preparing to celebrate the church's 100th anniversary on Oct. 20.
The first Episcopal service in Grayslake was held on October 20, 1907 with 70 people attending. The current building is a charming combination of stucco and arched beams with beautiful stained glass windows and a working bell tower.
St. Andrew's will sell a special "Centennial Cookbook" with a sample tasting of some of the recipes, open to the public, after the 10 a.m. service Sunday. The proceeds will go to offset the cost of the October Anniversary Service and Reception, plus a percentage going to St. Andrew's community outreach free clothing store for the poor (infants to teens) called Elijah's Mantle.

• Troop 92 of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods, is hosting a Boy Scout Day of Fun today. Any fifth- through eighth-grade boy is welcome to attend at no cost.
The troop would like to show boys what Boy Scouting is all about by hosting the following activities: camping demonstrations; first-aid activities; fire building; model rocket launching (they have some available or you can bring your own); as well as other outdoor games. Jason Evert will speak on the virtue of chastity at 5 p.m. Sunday while headlining the Life Night III Youth Rally at Our Lady of the Wayside Parish, 434 W. Park St., Arlington Heights. The 29-year-old Evert, a graduate of Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, is the author of numerous books that challenge young people to embrace the virtue of chastity.
Catholic worship leader Rob Kaczmark, who hosts and directs SPiRiT jUiCE, the Catholic music program that can be found at www.spiritjuicestudios.com, will join Evert at the rally. There is no charge to attend the event, which is open to the public and is co-sponsored by the Archdiocese's Chastity Education Initiative and Office of Catechesis and Youth Ministry.
