Round-up: Flores' hat trick rallies Mundelein

Eric Flores and his Mundelein soccer teammates would not be denied Thursday night.

Flores scored 3 goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Mustangs to a 4-3 win over visiting Zion-Benton in North Suburban Lake Division action.

Second-half goals by Manny Torres (his second of the game) and Andy Magiera had Zion-Benton up 3-2, but Flores' free kick tied the game.

Then with 15 minutes left, Flores headed in a serve by Jason Zeman.

Adam Reister also scored for the Mustangs, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

With the come-from-behind win, Mundelein improved to 7-4-3 and 1-3 in the NSC Lake.

Stevenson 3, Lake Forest 3: Ben Kluvers scored twice, Ross Dickson had a goal and an assist, and Colin Pekovitch chipped in 2 assists for Stevenson (8-3-2).

Colbert FVC medalist: Cary-Grove senior Brian Colbert dueled undulating Oak Grove Golf Course in Harvard to a draw, shooting an even-par 71 to win medalist honors in the Fox Valley Conference.

But Colbert's strong showing wasn't enough to lift the Trojans to the team title. Cary-Grove's top four cards totaled 324 shots, placing them just behind Crystal Lake Central's 319, as the Tigers' Griffin Bauman led the way with a 76 to take second.

Because FVC tournament points are weighed more heavily than regular-season points, the Tigers were able to leapfrog the Trojans and earn their second FVC title in three years despite losing one more dual match than Cary-Grove during the regular season.

Woodstock finished third (328) followed by McHenry (333), Prairie Ridge (339), Jacobs (343), Crystal Lake South (344), Dundee-Crown (345), Johnsburg (360), Grayslake North (361), Grayslake Central (361) and Huntley (405).

"I hit the ball really well today," Colbert said. "I hit a lot of greens and hit a lot of fairways. I didn't hit a lot of putts, but I think I hit 16 or 17 greens so that's OK."

Grayslake North's Ryan O'Malley shot an 81 and teammate Sean Humphrey had an 85 as both players earned all-Fox Valley Conference honors.

Ryan Brew led Grayslake Central with an 88, and Andrew Wilson added a 90.

Stevenson d. Round Lake: Margaret Salata slammed 7 kills and recorded 3 solo blocks, and Michelle Fleishman served 4 aces for the Patriots in their 25-8, 25-14 North Suburban Conference crossover win.

Hannah Burke, Monica Gasey, Maggie Lundstrom and Fleishman combined for 18 assists. Stevenson (13-5) received 3 kills apiece from Lauren Rachke, Taylor Berland and Kelly Hall. Tracy Africk and Mary Kate Fritzsche each had 6 digs.

Antioch d. Warren: Katie Lonergan had 9 kills for the Sequoits in their 25-23, 25-22 North Suburban Conference crossover victory.

Lindsay Callanan and Megan Toczek added 7 and 6 kills, respectively, for Antioch (16-3), while Melisa Ori dished 16 assists. Toczek also had 4 blocks.

"Strong serve-receive and passing were keys to the victory," Antioch coach Glen Heitman said. "Melisa Ori did a nice job moving the ball around and getting everyone involved. We also served well."

Deerfield d. Lakes: The Warriors pulled out a 25-18, 25-13 nonconference win over the Eagles, who were playing their sixth match in six days.

Steffanie Fisher had 4 kills and 5 digs for Lakes. Katie Thompson and Lindsay Frisby notched 8 digs apiece, Keshia Cunningham recorded 4 blocks, and Kathy Szczesniak contributed 5 assists and 5 serving points.

"This was one of our best serving (matches)," Lakes coach Carla Thompson said. "We have had many games where we were serving at about 78 percent. We were 93-percent serving tonight. We had four players with 100-percent serves. We were able to mix it up, which we have been working on."

Prairie Ridge d. Grayslake Central: Tory Dohm had 6 kills, 5 digs and 2 blocks for the Rams, who lost 25-15, 25-14 in Fox Valley Fox Division action.

Anna Dlesk had 2 kills and 2 blocks, and Brittany Gibson contributed 8 assists, 2 aces and a block for Grayslake Central (9-11, 1-3).

"We played well at the net on offense," Rams coach Jason Janczak said. "We had a tough time with serve-receive. Dohm had some great digs on defense, too."

Johnsburg d. Grayslake N.: The Skyhawks outlasted the Knights 27-25, 25-23 in Fox Valley Fox Division action.

For Grayslake North (8-11, 1-3), Megan Falk had 23 digs, Alex Lowry 5 kills, Kaitlyn Klausner 8 assists and 3 kills, and Grace Schlagetter 19 digs.

The Knights attacked 54 of 60 balls but terminated only 14.

"In a match like this, we have to do a better job of being aggressive at the net and finding ways for the ball to hit the floor," Knights coach Nikki Kirchway said. "On the other hand, our defense played phenomenally. We were able to get many balls up and play them out. Some of the balls the girls played out were flat-out amazing."
