Arts Festival: Chicago's fourth Annual Orthodox Christian Arts Festival will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 6 outdoors at Most Holy Mother of God Monastery, Route 45 and Sunshine Avenue, Third Lake. Church of the Holy Apostles: Father Joseph Atem, an Episcopal priest from Sudan and head of the Episcopal Seminary in Renk, Sudan, will be visiting Church of the Holy Apostles, 26238 N. Congregation Beth Judea: Stories From Our Sages will be taught by Rabbi Robert Gamer at Congregation Beth Judea, Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. It is the first class in the 2007-2008 Beth Judea Adult Education Series.

• Congregation Beth Judea, Route 83 at Hilltop Road in Long Grove, will hold its Annual Simchat Torah Flag Procession and Taffy Apple Party at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in the synagogue's main sanctuary, directly after a 6:30 p.m. Minyan Prayer Service.

Those present will then be able to participate in the "Hakafot" (processions) with the Torah scrolls and join in the singing and dancing. And, of course, eating the Taffy Apples.

Traditional Simchat Torah Services will be held in the main sanctuary of the synagogue at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 5.

• Congregation Beth Judea will welcome Congressman Mark Kirk at 10 a.m. Oct. 14. His talk will be "Israel in the Balance."

• A weekly class studying Jewish Law will meet from 8-9 a.m. Sunday mornings at Congregation Beth Judea, Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. Class meets from October through May.

The group, led by Rabbi Robert Gamer, will study the beginning of the Mishnah Torah. It is advised for participants to purchase a copy of Volume 1 of the Mishnah Torah in Hebrew/English. The edition that is recommended and will be used in class is by Moznaim Publishing Corp., translated by Rabbi Eliyahu Touger. Congregation B'nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim: The congregation will hold a ground-breaking ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 30 at the location for its new temple and high school at Pine Street and Lake-Cook Road in Deerfield. At noon, the Chicagoland Jewish High School will be dedicating its new building with the highlight "walking" the Torah from Morton Grove to the new site (adjacent to the temple).

Crosspoint Church: The church, formerly the Fox Lake Baptist Church, 27430 W. Nippersink Road, Ingleside, offers a contemporary worship service with a relevant message from the Bible at 10 a.m. Sundays.

Nursery is available as well as a Bible-based program for children ages kindergarten through sixth grade during the morning worship service.

On Sunday, Pastor Chuck Vitel will preach on the Old Testament Book of Daniel.

AWANA Ministries for children, ages kindergarten through sixth grade, meet on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

High school youth generally meet on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. Junior high students meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays.

A men's group meets on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. There are various ministries for women throughout the year.

First Church of Christ, Scientist: The church is at 240 Park Place in Libertyville, which is across from National City Bank. Sunday services will be held at 10 a.m. The subject this week is "Matter." Sunday School is held at the same hour for children and young people up to the age of 20.

Also, there is Wednesday midweek meetings at 7:30 p.m. Here attendants give gratitude for the help and blessings that their growing understanding of God has brought into their lives. All are welcome to attend services.

Grace Lutheran Church: Grace Lutheran Church offers two worship services each Sunday beginning this Sunday. A traditional worship service is offered at 8:30 a.m. A blended contemporary service is offered at 10 a.m. Children's ministries for age 4 to sixth grade will be offered during 10 a.m. worship., beginning Sunday. Children do not have to be members to attend Children's Ministries. Communion is served on the first and third Sunday of each month. Coffee fellowship is offered following each worship service in Cafe Grace. All are invited to join for worship and fellowship. Hadassah North Shore: A Mah Jongg Tournament will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Michael's Red Hots, Route 22 and Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove. Dairy lunch is included. Immanuel Church: Immanuel Church, 2300 Dilleys Road in Gurnee, offers two identical worship services at 9 and 10:45 a.m. This week's message is titled "High Definition Relationships" given by Senior Pastor Joe Boerman.

Kids' World provides a safe and fun environment for children from birth through fifth grade during all services. Midweek evening ministries include J.A.M. (sixth- through eighth-grade students) and IMPACT (high school) on Wednesdays. Small groups for men meet on Tuesday mornings and women's Bible studies are available on Wednesday mornings. Islamic Foundation North: The foundation will host an interfaith event with speaker Haroon Siddiqui, author of "Being Muslim, at noon Sunday at Islamic Foundation North, 1751 O'Plaine Road, Waukegan.

Siddiqui will be discussing issues covered in his book which is an assessment of the most current issues affecting Muslims and also all Western democracies in the wake of Sept. 11.

North Shore Congregation Israel: The congregation, 1185 Sheridan Road, Glencoe, announces a series of programming options titled "Thinking About Israel at 60."

Nachman Scholar Series with visiting scholars Dr. Frank Tachau and Rabbi Ezra Spicehandler will be 7:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 15, 22, 29 and Nov. 5. No charge but registration is required. NSCI Brotherhood speaker series will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 21, with Consul General Barukh Binah of the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest. Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation: PCUUC meets each Sunday at 9:15 a.m. in the Byron Colby Barn, 1561 Jones Point Road, Grayslake, in the Prairie Crossing community.

Join the Rev. Clare Butterfield, director, Faith in Place and the Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation for worship services this Sunday. This is a service about how latent capacities lie within the interactions of complex systems that are neither foreseeable nor reducible to the sum of the parts. There is more than meets the eye out there in the biological realm -- and that should be an occasion for hope.

Children's liberal religious education for preschool through high school runs concurrent to the adult service. Child care for children up to 3 years old is available during the service.

St. Andrew Episcopal Church: The church at 31 Park Ave., Grayslake, is preparing to celebrate the church's 100th anniversary on Oct. 20.

The first Episcopal service in Grayslake was held on October 20, 1907 with 70 people attending. The current building is a charming combination of stucco and arched beams with beautiful stained glass windows and a working bell tower.

St. Andrew's will sell a special "Centennial Cookbook" with a sample tasting of some of the recipes, open to the public, after the 10 a.m. service Sept. 30. The proceeds will go to offset the cost of the October Anniversary Service and Reception, plus a percentage going to St. Andrew's community outreach free clothing store for the poor (infants to teens) called Elijah's Mantle.

St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church: The church at 135 S. Buesching Road, Lake Zurich, will be the site of the Vicariate I Parish Life and Ministry Conference to be held from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Oct. 13. Theme for the conference is "Being a Catholic in the 21st Century …Bridges to the Sacred" and a variety of speakers will be featured throughout the day. St. Joseph Church: The church in Libertyville is offering a five-week Scripture Mini Course on the book of Revelation presented by Fr. Bill Burton, OFM. The sessions start Sept. 27 and will continue every Thursday evening through Oct. 25. All classes will be held in the Formation Center from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There is a fee of $20 to attend this series. St. Lawrence Episcopal Church: The church extends an open invitation to hear firsthand what is happening in the Episcopal Church of Sudan and in our companion parish, St. Bartholomew. On Sunday, St. Lawrence will host Father Joseph Garang Atem, assistant to the bishop of the Diocese of Renk, Episcopal Church of Sudan, and principal of Renk Bible School.

Father Joseph will speak at the morning worship services at 7:30 and 9 a.m. and the adult form at 10:10 a.m. St. Lawrence will also host an afternoon reception from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Parish Hall.

St. Lawrence participates in the Diocese of Chicago's companion relationship with the Diocese of Renk in Sudan.

St. Matthew Lutheran Church: The church, 24500 N. Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods, has arranged with Grandmaster Yury Shulman to provide chess lessons for the community at St. Matthew on Thursdays from 5:30 to 6.30 p.m. every week starting in September.

The class is open to any beginning chess player ranging in ages from 5 to 95 years.

• Troop 92 of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods, is hosting a Boy Scout Day of Fun Sept. 29. Any fifth- through eighth-grade boy is welcome to attend at no cost.

The troop would like to show boys what Boy Scouting is all about by hosting the following activities: camping demonstrations; first-aid activities; fire building; model rocket launching (they have some available or you can bring your own); as well as other outdoor games. They will be preparing Dutch oven treats while you enjoy the campfire.

Parents are welcome to attend. Prizes will be given out. Santa Maria del Popolo Parish: The program "Why Am I Catholic" is coming Oct. 5-6 to the church, 116 N. Lake St., Mundelein. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church: On Sunday, the church will have a bake sale fundraiser in the Narthex between and after the second service, which is held at 10 a.m. The church has applied to Thrivent for matching funds, so the more they sell, the more they can receive. United Methodist Church of Libertyville: A rummage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 5 and 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 6 at the church, 429 Brainerd Ave., Libertyville. Bag day is Oct. 6.

The United Protestant Church of Grayslake: Get ready to eat your fill of homemade spaghetti at the annual Spaghetti Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the United Protestant Church of Grayslake. For $20, a whole family can enjoy a homemade meal that includes spaghetti with a secret-recipe sauce, coleslaw, garlic bread, drinks and desserts. And for vegetarians, new this year is an option for a meatless marinara spaghetti sauce. Single prices for adult meals are $6, seniors are $5, children ages 5-12 are $4 and kids age 4 and under eat free.

First Church of Christ, Scientist: The church at 421 E. Main St., Barrington, offers an opportunity to share in blessings and gratitude on Wednesday evenings.

Beginning at 7:30 p.m. each Wednesday a hymn is sung, readings are given and then the meeting is open to the congregation to share how prayer and a trust in God has brought healing, wholeness and resolution to all kinds of challenges including addictions, health problems, relationship difficulties and employment needs. Plan to join in this healing hour.
