Sunset results: The thousands in attendance at the Summer Sunset Festival held over Labor Day weekend enjoyed various cuisines, musical genres, carnival rides, games, fireworks and competitions.
Sunset 5K Race/Walk: Overall female winner is Christina Dam of McHenry with a time of 18:59.0. Overall male winner is Steven Bland of Lake in the Hills with a time of 16:54.1. Congratulations to each of the 263 participants for a great race.
Battle of the Bands: Seven bands competed in this year's Battle of the Bands contest. Each band played a 20-minute set. Judges had a tough decision, but at the end of the day, these bands were crowned victorious.
In Red was awarded first place, The Geriatrics came in a close second, and third place went to Joel & Scott.
A special thank you to all the bands for wonderful, entertaining performances.
Idol Competition: Move over American Idol, there's a new hit in town. Lake in the Hills held its second Idol competition showcasing local talent. The winner in the 16 and younger category was Jaclyn Quill, while Stephanie Tanski took the title in the 17 and older category. All the singers were outstanding and we look forward to more amazing performances in Idol '08.
Skateboard Competition: After two days of death-defying flips and totally radical tricks, first- through third-place awards for each age category were announced as follows:
• 9 and under: Andre Gutierrez, first; Drake Perez, second; Zac Close, third.
10-12 years: CJ Kelly, first; London Davis, second; Jason Siebert, third.
• 13-15 years: Joe Angeletos, first; Ryan Buss, second; Kyle Kelley, third.
• 16 and older: Andrew Gary, first; Tom Popp, second; Adam Thomalla, third.
Melon Propellin' Competition: Winner of this year's contest -- by a landslide -- was the Crystal Lake YMCA's father-daughter Indian Princesses program. They launched a melon 392 feet with the Chactow Chucker, designed by Jim Wolfe. Awesome!

Worldwide Day of Play: The Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a Worldwide Day of Play Event from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 29. This free annual celebration, sponsored by Nickelodeon, promotes active playtime for children. There are fun, family-orientated activities planned. Bring the entire family out to Sunset Park, at Miller and Albrecht roads, to enjoy the day. Get some free fitness and nutrition tips, too.
For youth
Kids' Craft Corner: Enjoy special time with your child as we meet to share in making a fall craft. Join instructor, Deena Ciavarella at the Lake in the Hills Village lower-level classroom from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. or 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. Friday. Skill enhancement may include scissors and glue use, painting, creative and imaginative thinking. Dress for messy fun. Class sizes are limited; register early. Adult participation required. Resident fee is $8 parent/child with $5 for each additional; nonresident fee is $10 parent/child with $6 for each additional child.
Imagine Tomorrow computer class: Get ready to become a Computer Detective on a learning adventure to places such as Email Trail or Laptop Lagoon.
The Parks and Recreation Department of Lake in the Hills, along with Tech Adventures Inc., invites your child, aged 3 to 5, to learn computer and literacy skills and build self-confidence in a positive learning environment.
This class begins with an interactive video voice mail describing a new, fun-filled mission of the day. Children then move on to their own wireless laptops where they work on custom software designed for each mission.
Advancing at their own respective paces, children proudly apply new technology skills to solve problems and accomplish their goals.
When class ends, children continue to enjoy their mission from home with our online reinforcement activities. No computer experience is necessary. Class meets from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 26 to Nov. 14 in the Village Hall Community Room. Resident fee is $135; nonresident fee is $145.
Brochure art contest: Attention artists between 5 and 12 years of age.
The Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department wants to feature your artistic creation in our Winter/Spring Brochure, maybe even on the cover.
Submit an original drawing/painting of your favorite winter or spring recreational activity on a white, 8½- by 11-inch piece of paper. Include your name, address, phone number and a brief description of the activity depicted in your picture.
Judges will select a winner and place the artwork on our Web site throughout the seasonal brochure.
Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 28. Submitted artwork will not be returned.
"High School Musical" trip: Grab your friends and join the phenomenon that's got kids singing and dancing to the tunes of "High School Musical." The trip is offered to youth in sixth through ninth grades.
Registration deadline is Thursday to join the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department on a trip to the Metropolis Performing Arts Center in Arlington Heights to see a live performance of the ultimate "jock meets nerd" love story. A cast of nearly 50 artists will light up the stage with singing, dancing, music, comedy and great times -- they'll have your on your feet cheering for the underdog.
The show begins at 8 p.m. on Sept. 28. We'll stop for dinner on the way, so remember to bring spending money. Resident rate is $40; nonresident rate is $50. Fee includes ticket, chaperones and transportation. Departure from village hall is at 5:30 p.m. and will return at approximately 11 p.m.
For adults
Crop night: Join the Parks and Recreation Department in the Village Hall Multipurpose room from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday for a night of fun, laughter and creativity. Enjoy the ample space available to spread your memories out and scrapbook with friends.
Fee includes pizza, drinks, door prizes and maybe a few surprises. Fee is $7 per person.
Outdoor cooking: Break out of the hotdog and hamburger mode and make a meal using a Dutch oven and some pie irons. Bring your favorite fruit, table setting and knife to Barbara Key Park shelter No. 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Enjoy homemade pizza, fruit salad and upside-down cake. We'll make a fire and get in the specifics of efficient and effective charcoal use, temperature and timing. We'll eat our goodies as we go.
Scout leaders can schedule a special session for their troop. Resident fee is $8; nonresident fee is $10.
