Chargers upend Wolves

Dundee-Crown is the latest team to knock off a nemesis.

Just a week after Cary-Grove's girls volleyball team upended perennial power Prairie Ridge, D-C did the trick Tuesday night, downing the Wolves 17-25, 25-19, 25-22 in a Fox Valley Conference crossover match in Crystal Lake.

"We really played well as a team tonight," said D-C coach Tracy Williams.

The Chargers (7-2) bounced back from a Game 1 loss with strong play from Kathleen Collingbourne (11 kills, 15 digs), Amanda Lutzow (7 kills, 12 digs), Stephanie Thorson (11 assists, 6 kills) and Katie Cutinello (14 assists).

"We started out a bit slow, but kept our composure against Prairie Ridge, who we haven't beaten in a long time, so this is a great win for us," Williams added.

Girls volleyball

St. Charles North d. South Elgin: Despite solid efforts from Hayley Bradley (3 kills, 4 digs), Christie Cortese (2 kills, 5 digs), Tara Bradley (11 assists) and Genevieve Johnson (5 digs), South Elgin (2-7, 0-2) dropped this Upstate Eight Conference contest in two games (25-12, 25-17).

Bartlett d. Lake Park: Bartlett (9-4, 2-0) remained unbeaten in Upstate Eight Conference action after picking up this 25-21, 25-23 victory over Lake Park.

Emily Hayes (6 kills), Carly Sahagian (10 kills, 6 aces) and Megan Mangahas (27 assists) led the Hawks attack.

"Emily's aggressiveness from her experience as a middle is making her an even bigger asset to have outside," said Bartlett coach Jill Bergmann. "Carly was hard to stop.

"Our overall passing looked much stronger enabling Megan (Mangahas) to earn 27 assists."

Walther Lutheran d. Westminster Christian: Westminster Christian (2-7, 0-1) dropped its first Private School League contest of the season in two games (25-16, 25-19) despite key efforts from Abby Stevenson (6 kills, block) and Lindsay Burket (4 kills, dig).

Cary-Grove d. Huntley: Despite opening this nonconference meeting with a 23-25 loss Cary-Grove battled back, winning the final two games by scores of 25-19 and 25-16 to improve to 12-3 overall.

Leading the Trojan attack were Allison Straumann (14 kills, 15 digs), Breanna Smith (6 kills, 5 blocks) and Erin Wahl (27 digs).

"We started out slow in Game 1, but kept our composure in the final two," said Trojans coach Patty Langanis.

Huntley (4-5) was led by Krissy Bergquist (2 aces, 11 kills), Toni Jaehnig (2 aces, 5 kills), Taylor Karns (17 digs) and Stephanie Aroworade (5 kills, 3 solo blocks). Allyson Stellmach added 8 digs, 20 assists and 8 points.

CL South d. Grayslake North: Crystal Lake South improved to 6-3 overall with this 25-11, 25-17 victory over nonconference opponent Grayslake North.

Katie Trayser (5 kills, 8 digs) and Jordan Guida (8 digs, 16 assists) combined to lead the Gators offensively and defensively.

Jacobs d. Grayslake Central: With scores of 25-23 and 25-15, Jacobs (5-5) earned this nonconference win over Grayslake Central. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles were Stacie Weinert (7 kills, 6 digs, block), Amy Cavanaugh (6 kills, 4 digs, 2 assists), Lauren Pigatto (7 kills, 2 blocks, ace, 5 digs) Erica Liss (4 kills, 2 blocks, 13 assists) and Brittney Mascola ( 8 digs) in a complete team effort.

Chicago Waldorf d. Fox Valley Lutheran Academy: Fox Valley Lutheran fell to Chicago Waldorf in two games (25-23, 25-19) despite solid efforts from Sam Pfortmiller (3 aces, dig, 5 assists), Sara Mounger (4 kills, 2 digs) and Katie Mazur (2 assists).

Larkin d. East Aurora: Larkin collected this Upstate Eight Conference win defeating East Aurora in two games by scores of 25-16, 25-13. Team stat leaders were Liza Smithberger (12 assists), Jessica Harris (5 kills), Claire Sherman (3 aces), Rachel Hodges (5 aces) and Morgan Smith (2 aces).

"Our serving definitely improved tonight," said Larkin coach Gail Johnson. "We are moving quicker and communicating more which I hope remains for future games."

Boys Soccer

Huntley 5, Johnsburg 2: Niko Carbonara led the Red Raiders (4-4, 1-1) to victory scoring 4 of Huntley's 5 goals. Adrian Alejos assisted Carbonara for 3 of his 4 goals while Jesus Alejos assisted one. Jesus Alejos also put a goal in net off an assist from Niko Carbonara. Kevin Montelongo had 9 saves while he shared the net with Jonathan Jagdharry who also had one save.

Westminster Christian 1, Wheaton Academy 1: Westminster Christian (3-4-2, 0-1-1) took a 1-0 first half lead and were able to conclude this Private School League knotted in a 1-1 tie.

J.J. Marshall scored the lone Warrior goal of the game assisted by Ryan Beachler, while Ethan Flickinger kept things even in goal tallying 12 saves.

Indian Creek 2, St. Edward 0: Unable to generate any offense, St. Edward (0-7) dropped this nonconference contest 3-0. Will Lytle kept busy in goal for the Green Wave netting 10 saves.

Grayslake North 3, Prairie Ridge 2: Scoreless at the half, Prairie Ridge (0-8, 0-2) fought hard to conclude regulation in a 2-2 tie, but fell in double overtime 3-2. Marcello Jorge opened up the Wolves scoring on a rebound off of the Grayslake goalkeeper, and Alex Polizzi later scored the second PR goal unassisted.

A.J. Sturm kept Prairie Ridge in the game recording 15 saves.

"This was an unfortunate game for us to lose," said coach David O'Leary. "We played some of the best soccer we have played all year controlling much of the game both halves.

"We have gotten into a rut of playing well and not getting the results we worked for, but we will continue to try to turn things around."

CL South 1, Jacobs 0: With a first-half goal from Matt Zaluckyj (Nick Jones assist), Crystal Lake South (7-2-1, 1-1) picked up this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win over Jacobs (1-5, 0-2). Zach Dalzell (9 saves) was in goal for the Gators, while Danny Trevor (4 saves) defended the net for the Golden Eagles.

"We put good pressure on them, but our offense is just struggling to get it done," said Jacobs coach Jim Dzialo.

Streamwood 3, St. Charles East 0: Streamwood picked up its third consecutive win and third straight shutout with this 3-0 Upstate Eight Conference win over St. Charles East.

The Sabres (5-6-1, 1-1) had goals from Matt Rasinski, Alex Perez and Alex Lopez. Rasinski and Alex Aranda each had assists.

In goal, Juan Ortiz racked up 6 saves en route to a third consecutive shutout.

Burlington Central 1, Richmond-Burton 1: After concluding regulation in a 1-1 tie, Burlington Central (3-3-2, 1-1-1) held on to conclude this Big Northern East match in a tie after single overtime.

Mike McCurdy got the Rockets on the board scoring on a pass from Nate Parks. In goal, Kyle DeRaedt kept things even blocking 5 shots on goal.

"It was a close one that we just couldn't pull out for the win," said BC coach Michael Gecan.

Wheeling 1, Bartlett 0: Despite playing an outstanding match, Bartlett (2-3-1) dropped this nonconference meeting of the Bartlett Tournament. Vince DiNuzzo was in goal for the Hawks collecting 12 saves to keep Bartlett in the contest.

Women's volleyball

Judson d. Robert Morris: Moving to 2-0 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Judson University volleyball team (5-6 overall) took a four-game win over Robert Morris College, 27-30, 30-23, 32-30, 30-24. After losing the first game, JU came storming back to win the next three.

Senior Kym Gagnon led JU with 15 kills and only had four errors on 38 attempts. She also recorded 17 digs. Sophomore Danielle Dull had 12 kills. Sophomore Deb Leganski picked up 22 digs.
