Elgin, South Elgin, Larkin all notch wins

Trailing 2-1 at the half, Elgin (3-1) battled back to defeat Huntley (2-1) in continued action at the St. Edward boys soccer tournament Thursday.

Hugo Aranda scored the Maroons' lone first-half goal on a penalty kick and assisted a Kevin Rodriguez goal to tie things up in the second half. Joey Perez put Elgin on top for good with an unassisted goal later in the game.

For Huntley, Niko Carbonara and Fedya Larin each had single goals both assisted by Jesus Alejos.

Nikil Satish defended the net for the Maroons tallying 8 saves, while Kevin Montelongo (3 saves) was in goal for the Red Raiders.

Boys soccer

South Elgin 4, Genoa-Kingston 1: While Genoa-Kingston was the first to get on the board, it would be South Elgin (2-1) that would walk away with the victory, the Storm's second straight in the Burlington Central Tournament.

Ernesto Caballero got the Storm on the board assisted by Hugo Urrutia. Both James Hollander (Bart Mazurek assist) and Urrutia (Javier Rojo) added single goals to give South Elgin a 3-1 first half lead. During the second half, Mazurek added a goal of his own.

"We still have things to work on, but we're looking better at this stage than we did three games in last year," said South Elgin coach Mark Neville.

The win will pit the Storm against Elgin at 4:30 p.m. today for the tournament championship.

Larkin 1, Bartlett 0: Larkin (3-0, 1-0) opened Upstate Eight Conference play on a high note with this 1-0 win over Bartlett (2-1-1). Danny Hinterlong scored the lone goal of the game assisted by David Hernandez seven minutes into the second half.

Defending the Royal net, Raziel Famarribi blocked 6 shots on goal to preserve the shutout.

Glenbard North 1, Streamwood 0: Juan Ortiz recorded 6 saves in goal for Streamwood (2-4) as the Sabres fell to Glenbard North in the Addison Trail Tournament.

Cary-Grove 3, St. Edward 0: With goals from Tyler Cuchna, Nick McDonald and Kyle Blank, Cary-Grove (3-0) blanked St. Edward (0-2) during play at the St. Edward Tournament. Trojan goals were assisted by Patrick Shelton, Calvin Brown and Andy Martin. Keenan Walsh was in goal for C-G collecting one save.

Despite the loss, St. Edward managed to shut down the Cary offense throughout the second half. In goal, Will Lytle tallied 12 saves for the Green Wave.

Elgin Academy 4, Rockford Lutheran 1: Elgin Academy (1-4-1) took a 3-1 first half lead and never looked back as it put its first win of 2007 into the books. Nick Garcia, Cory Ebert and Adam Neuman each found the back of the net for the Hilltoppers during the first half with Eric Gould adding a second half score. Assists came from Chris Theodorou and Alex Osinga. Aaron Thomas kept busy in goal for Elgin Academy racking up 10 saves.

Boys golf

Dundee-Crown d. Grayslake Central: With a medalist round from Jordan Nelson, who shot a 37 on the par 34 Bonnie Dundee, Dundee-Crown improved to 4-1 with this 159 to 165 nonconference win over Grayslake Central. Also finishing strong for the Chargers were Steve Cathony with a 39, Jarrett Wollenberg (41) and Matt Thomas (42).

Chicago Christian d. Westminster Christian: Despite the 166 to 186 loss, Westminster Christian saw nice rounds from Ted Grossman, who shot a 40, and Brandon Siewert, who finished with a 44 at Wing Park Golf Course.

Cary-Grove d. Huntley: Led by medalists Brian Colbert and Scott Brady. who each shot a 39, Cary-Grove came away with this 159 to 195 Fox Valley Conference win over Huntley.

The Red Raiders were led by Brian Ackerman (47) and Katelyn Anderberg who added a 48.

St. Edward d. Aurora Central Catholic: Behind Brad Winters, who shot a medalist round 37 for the Green Wave, St. Edward improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Suburban Catholic Conference play with this 169 to 177 win at its home course, the par 36 Villa Olivia. Brett Manning shot a 42 for St. Edward.

Bartlett wins triangular: With a 153, Bartlett etched out both Neuqua Valley (156) and South Elgin (176) to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Nick Quagliano, Trace Pomplun and Anthony Burdi each shot matching 38' to lead the Hawks to victory. Andrew McKinley shot a 39 for Bartlett.

Girls volleyball

Bartlett d. Addison Trail: Bartlett improved to 2-0 on the season with this nonconference win over Addison Trail in three games by scores of 25-15, 16-25 and 25-21.

The Hawks saw great net play from Carly Sahagian (8 kills), Anna Dudkiewicz (4 kills) and Lauren Sladek (5 kills). Emily Hayes (4 kills) controlled the middle as well as the front row offense. Megan Mangahas recorded 10 assists for the Hawks.

Hampshire d. Rockford Lutheran: Behind solid play from Amy Wehrs (9 kills), Jackie Clai (6 kills) and Jenn Kondrat (11 digs), Hampshire (1-0) recorded this nonconference win in two games (25-15, 25-20).

"It was nice to get the first game out of the way and get a win," said Whip-Purs coach Karen Whitehouse. "Both teams played well."

Huntley at Plainfield North: Dropping games to Naperville North (25-20, 25-15) and Crystal Lake Central (25-11, 25-23) while at the Plainfield North Invitational, Huntley fell to 0-3 on the season.

Despite the loss, the Red Raiders saw solid play from Kristen Bergquist (6 kills), Toni Jaehnig (8 kills) and Allyson Stellmach (14 assists).

Prairie Ridge d. Jacobs: Despite solid play from Lauren Pigatto (3 kills), Stacie Weinert (14 digs), Brittney Mascola (15 digs) and Erica Liss (11 assists), Jacobs (0-1) dropped their season opener to Prairie Ridge 25-23, 25-18 in nonconference action.
