Huntley, Cary-Grove open soccer season with wins

Huntley kicked off the 2007 boys soccer season Saturday by defeating Westminster Christian (0-2) at the St. Edward Tournament.

Niko Carbonara scored the lone goal of the game, assisted by Max Geigle.

Kevin Montelongo and Wes Torres shared keeper duties for the Red Raiders, combining for 3 saves en route to the shutout. Dan Graves blocked 3 shots on goal for the Warriors.

Boys soccer

Cary-Grove 2, Elgin 0: Two first-half goals lifted Cary-Grove (1-0) past Elgin as the Trojans opened up play at the St. Edward Tournament with a win.

Tyler Cuchna got the Trojans on the board with a knock assisted by Andy Martin, and Nick McDonald tapped in an insurance goal off a pass from Andy Roberts.

In goal, Keenan Walsh recorded 7 saves to preserve the shutout.

CL South 0, Hampshire 0: Crystal Lake South (2-0-1) and Hampshire (1-0-1) butted heads in the Rockford Auburn Tournament ending action knotted in a 0-0 tie. For the Gators, Zach Dalzell preserved the shutout and the tie, while Cameron Roth (6 saves) did the same for Hampshire.

Streamwood 1, York 0: Matt Rasinski would score the lone goal of this match with one second remaining in the first half on a penalty kick to lift the Sabres (1-1) to a 1-0 win in the Addison Trail Tournament.

Manuel Ocampo racked up 2 saves to maintain the shutout for Streamwood.

Dundee-Crown splits at North Shore Shootout: Competing in the North Shore Shootout, Dundee-Crown split, dropping Game 1 to Carmel via a 4-0 conclusion before going on to defeat St. Patrick 4-0 in Game 2. Mike Zozokos was in goal for both games, tallying 8 saves versus Carmel and 3 more for the St. Patrick shutout.

Christian Meza got right to business with a hat trick against St. Patrick. He was assisted once by Eddie Bernal.

"It's pretty typical for Meza to lead the way for us," said Dundee-Crown coach Rey Vargas of Meza, who had 31 goals last year. "He's a big part of our offense and makes things happen.

The Chargers (1-1) will meet up with Waukegan (1-1) sometime this week for the consolation championship back at Lake Forest.

Wyatt Vuccic scored the final goal (Ricky Garcia assist).

Aurora Central 4, Elgin Academy 2: Trailing 2-0 at the half, Elgin Academy (0-1-2) got two back, but still came up short in this nonconference meeting. Jackson Rudolph and Cory Ebert each tallied unassisted goals for the Hilltoppers. Freshman goalkeeper Brandon Cork (7 saves) defended the net for Elgin Academy, while Dan Vecchiolla led the defense.

Bartlett 2, Schaumburg 2: Trailing 1-0 at the half, Bartlett's Garret Dini found the back of the net twice to lead the Hawks to a 2-2 nonconference tie. Dini scored on passes from Doug Digiovanni and Joey Macchione.

Vince DiNuzzo defended the net for Bartlett (2-0-1) keeping things even with 8 saves.

Girls tennis

CL South wins Schaumburg Invitational: With 24 points, Crystal Lake South dominated the Schaumburg Invitational. Conant finished second with 15.5 points, Hononegah (15) followed and Dundee-Crown took fourth with 12.5 points.

Leading the way for the Gators were No. 1 and No. 2 singles Jennifer Maruyama and Abbey Kolarczyk, who each went 3-0 for first place honors. No. 3 doubles Katelyn Czernek/Maryann Piel also went unbeaten for another South first.

Laura Roesslein/Liana Semchuk (No. 1 doubles) finished fifth going 2-1 and No. 2 doubles Amy Ross/Kaitlin Voss finished play 2-1 for second place overall.

Men's soccer

Judson 2, Indiana Wesleyan 2: Judson (1-0-1) pulled a 2-2 draw with Indiana Wesleyan at the Judson Tournament. Milos Bajic got the Eagles on the board finding the back of the net after a header from Vitor Bravo off a corner dish from Gustavo Oliveira. Bajic recorded his second goal in the 89th minute assisted by Tim Balatsoukas and Mark Howlett.

Neither team was able to score in double overtime. Kyle Selph kept things even netting 7 saves in goal for Judson.
